Dex sits up in bed and looks at me. "I'm going to make breakfast. Get dressed and meet me in the kitchen in a couple of minutes." He climbs out of bed, slips a T-shirt over his head, and exits the room.
I climb out of bed and move over to the cupboard. I pick out a plum purple halter dress. I pull off my pyjama shorts and t-shirt. I put the dress on and slip my feet into ballet flats. I put my hair up in a ponytail and exit the room.
As I enter the kitchen, the smell of bacon hits me, and my stomach starts to churn. I begin to gag and run to the bathroom. I slam the door shut and lean over the toilet, letting the contents of my stomach out. I hear the bathroom door open.
Dex stands for me. He rubs my back for me. He kisses me. "You've made me a happy guy, Ava."
I throw up.
The tap turns on, and I feel a washcloth pressed against my face.
I start to feel a bit better. I rise and walk over to the sink. I wash my face to get rid of the vomit I still have on my face. I pull my toothbrush out of the cupboard and brush my teeth. I use the mouthwash afterwards.
Dex carries me out of the bathroom and places me on a chair. He pulls his phone out. "I need to call the doctor and get her to check you out, Ava. She's going to give you a prescription for prenatal vitamins."
How does he know all this?
"My cousin is a doctor in the NICU unit. She's told me everything I need to know about pregnancies. She wants to meet you."
I lean forward. "Is she going to be my doctor now?"
He shrugs. "I can call her and get her to come here if you prefer?"
"Yes, bring her here. I don't want to go to the hospital right now."
Dex puts the phone to his ear and walks outside, pacing back and forth.
I walk over to the lounge and pull a pillow onto me. I wrap my arms around the pillow, and I close my eyes.
Dex enters the house, and his phone beeps. He looks at his phone. "Ava, I need to go to the office now. I'm sorry I can't be here when the doctor comes." He kisses my forehead. He picks up his briefcase and exits the house.
Half an hour after he left, someone knocked on the door. I opened it to a woman wearing a white coat.
The woman smiles. "You must be Ava Montgomery."
"That's me. Come in." I step away from the door, and she enters the house.
