[the first worlds your soulmate says to you are written on the inside of your wrist.]
hinata shouyou had been your best friend since grade school. the short orange haired boy was always so full of energy and you were quiet and composed, but he lived next door and his mother (and your own) had been adamant about the two of you being friends. you didn't mind that much, there wasn't really any other kids your age in the small village you called home, but as you got older, you learned to appreciate the boy. when he did his morning runs, too long and exhausting for you, you rode beside him on your bike and you talked about everything, because honesty, he never shut up but it was nice half the time. the two of you had never really been apart, you didn't remember when you had met him to be exact, something along the lines of your birthday party down at the docs and he had fallen into the water.
the two of you were the best of friends, but it never progressed past that and it was okay, because the words on the inside of his wrist were 'you're taller than me?!' and your own were 'you shouldn't be here, a waste of space.' and if you knew one thing about shouyou, it was most defiantly that he was not mean. he could be scary at times, maybe a bit intense, but trying to say shouyou was mean was like saying that you were a purple haired three faced firebreathing dragon, it was simply false.
while he got into volleyball, you got into it too and how it looked behind a camera. because maybe it was the way he looked in he sunlight and how high he jumped but you always tossed for him and the two of you had been joined at the hips and when high school applications came, it burned. your father wanted you to go to a better school, and it shattered somewhere inside of you but shouyou was adamant about keeping you safe and happy. he held you when you cried and told him you were going to go to seijou, and he understood because like your own family, your father's worked long and taxing hours overseas and in strange places to send money to support their families and your mothers ran the house and looked after the kids. so he held you like he always did, running his hands through his hair and your mother didn't say anything when shouyou didn't go back to his own home that night.
in order to busy yourself with something, something other than Shouyou playing volleyball in your backyard after school, you had joined seijou's boys volleyball team, as their manager. and it was alright, you guessed, the girls glared daggers into your back when you took notes and the boys clicked their to tongues but only ever when when you reminded oikawa-senpai that he needed to stretch more because you knew shouyou never ever stretched and you always tended to tense ankles and stiff shoulders.
without fault, every night, you road your bike to the mountain pass and waited patiently for shouyou and the two of you took the mountain home side by side and feeling the cold evening air in your hair and you felt like it was going to be alright.
and you thought of your mark, barely seen out of the sleeve of your shirt, you never really bothered yourself with yours.
they always told you that your soul mates words were the most important thing in your life, because they changed and moulded over the years. for example, your mother had the words 'you are the most gorgeous woman I had ever seen, may I sit here?' on her wrist for years but it wasn't until your little sister was born that they shifted and changed into 'this family is the most gorgeous I have ever seen'. words mimicked by your father in the hospital room that morning.
your mother told you, when you were younger crying in your bedroom because the words had definite lines now, that she said it didn't matter because it would be perfect and it would be alright. you were terrified to meet your soulmate, because it idea of one person and it would be perfect and flawless was kind of terrifying so you learned to not really bother yourself with the mark because there was shouyou and volleyball to attend to.
there was a time, when you were in your second year of middle school, where the senpai in the year above you had spat something along the same lines and your face went too red because she was pretty but was she your soul mate? when she shoved you into the locker and scoffed as she walked off, you guessed she wasn't. they always said it was a feeling you got, when both parts had been said like a sort of realisation and that scared you because you wouldn't know but you would feel it.
the coach laughed at the expression on your face because you were excited, a practice match between seijou and karasano, and that meant that you totally got to see that amazing new play that shou wouldn't shut up about. he was in the back when their team arrived, dressed in black in great contrast to your own teal, and his face lit up when you gave him a soft wave and rushed over to him. "(f/n)!"
you barely had time to register anything as he jumped, wrapping his arms around your waist and you laughed when he picked you up, nails digging into his shoulder. "s-shou..." strange vibes were coming from two of the players, and you turned to see their eyes, slight with joy and clasping hands in front of them, and you swallowed and gave them a shaking smile.
"get off your datefriend." the blonde growled, and your face lit up because...well, shou's description of the boy was the most accurate you had ever seen.
"you must be tsukishima-kun! shou has told me so much about you all." you bowed lightly, and hinata was jumping with his arm looped tightly with your own.
"this is (f/n)-san! they've been my best friend since we were kids! but they're a meanie and didn't come to karasano."
"oi, shou don't be so mean." you punched his arm and he laughed, the coach calling your name and you waved lightly and bowed as you rushed back, pulling your messy hair up and the game started.it was in short, it was probably the most amazing thing you had ever seen. the game was amazing, hinata was amazing, and you knew he could jump but you were in awe after the game, rushing out to the team because they were waiting to leave it seemed, and you brushed someone's back when you came to an abrupt stop. when cold blue eyes may your own, staring sown at you, you gave a sheepish laugh because this was the boy that had helped shouyou so so much and you swallowed hard. "you're an amazing setter!" you blurted out, his eyes widening and his cheeks were dusted red. "maybe even better than oikawa-kun!" your hands were up and you were having a lot of intense emotions. "the ball went to fast like ZOOM and when his hand hit it the sound it made was amazing!" he was too red in the face, hands in his pockets and he scoffed as he looked off to the side.
he didn't have a chance to say anything in return because hinata was there and he tackled you to the ground in a giggling mess. "did you see that quick?!" he shouted and you winced as you sat up and rubbed the back of your head.
"yeah shou, it was cool." he seemed so happy, and your shoulders deflated. "you're really good at volleyball dork." your hand pushed his head away, and the two of you stood on shaking legs.
kageyama was standing with fists clenched at his aides and his face was far too red and Hinata could only stare at the look on kageyama's face. "you s-shouldn't be here, a waste of s-space—!" kageyama stuttered and your heart shot into your throat. hinata gasped, taking a step back and you could only swallow when his head snapped to you, face the colour of the blood moon. "are you a-alright?!" he yelled and you nodded, shoulders hunching and the laughter that came up was genuine.you nodded, and he seemed relieved, waking over to rub the back of your head with a shaking and gentle hand and hinata was still staring. "wait!" you both stopped, turning to blink as he pointed a finger at the two of your red faces. "isn't that what your mark says (f/n)?!" you swallowed and nodded, taking a step away from kageyama who did the same thing, fists clenched at your sides and staring at your feet blushing.
"kageyama! hinata! we're leaving!" daichi yelled and the two boys jumped, and hinata stared at you as he started to walk backwards. "we are so speaking of this later." you could only nod, and kageyama couldn't meet your eye as the two of them started running towards the gates of seijou, pushing and shoving each other.
you turned around, walking inside and going straight for the bathroom. your face was far too red and you laughed when the water soothed your skin.
talk about aggressively caring about someone.
but nothing short of kind of amazing.
