they said that your soul mark meant something deep and personal. something that only your soul mate would recognise, only they would know, it had very little to do about the other person, about you.

that meant, that something that was exclusive to only you, was on their body too.

your mother smiled and laughed a lot when you were younger, she was kind and gentle. she stayed home when your fathers went to work, because...sometimes, soul marks were weird like that. each one of your parents had two marks each, so like your papa had ocean waves on his foot and words on the base of his neck. your dad had sea shells behind his ear, and nightshade on the dip of his hip bone. your mother had writing from an obscure book in a dead language on her shoulder, and a primrose just above her heart.

it was rare, rare to have more than one mark on your body, and if you did, to find all the people, that was even rarer. some people's ideas of soul mates was one person, another to share the world with you, but what about your aunt keiko who had six marks, and lived in a big house with her wives and husbands and girlfriends and boyfriends;  you had nine cousins. what about your uncle rei, who's mark was black and white and his soulmate was black and white as well, and they didn't have any kids, because they weren't in a romantic relationship at all, but a platonic one?

sometimes, your soul mate could be a best friend. it doesn't mean marriage and children and a happy ever after, your mother told you sometimes, soul mates were just someone to make sure you were never alone in times of need.

you grew up with a big family, always talk of the neighbourhood, because they said it was a curse (you thought it was a blessing) to have more than one mark. it wasn't about spending the rest of your life alone with another person, it was about being happy for the rest of your life.

and sometimes, you knew best, it got lonely with two people.

you were a late bloomer, by the fourth grade, your whole family, in their pride, had marks of their own, a few cousins had more than one, but most of them only had a single picture or a saying, if you were really really lucky, you got a name.

your mother said your family were blessed with pictures, it made it all that much more adventurous to find the people that click and fall into place with them. you were special in your own way, passing the fourth year without a single mark on your body. grade school ended and so did the bullying for the most part, three parents coming to pick you up from class, people said mean things. you couldn't love more than one person, you couldn't give your soul to more than another, and they pushed you down and laughed.

they told you you didn't even know who your father was.
yes you did, you just happened to have two of them.

middle school came with staying quiet and not drawing attention to yourself. it was easier to keep people at a distance like that, maybe, and you were busy as it was. because your mother had just had twins, two little boys, and they were a mess by you loved them with your whole heart. second year came with changing in the locker room, and by this point, most every person in your grade had their mark. yumi from class 1-3 had actually found her soulmate, one of the rare ones blessed with a name, in the form of the prettiest senpai of the third year. girls gushed and demanded to see marks, and boys wore them with pride out and open. you were left invisible until cornered one day after running laps in gym. a few girls had come up to you, their eyes bright and wonderful, asking if they could see your mark, because no one had ever seen your mark. no one had gotten close enough to ask, and that left a bitter taste in your mouth. "marks aren't supposed to be shown, their private, and sacred, and they're not for everyone to see."
but one of the girls clung to your arm, eyes bright and she was grinning too brightly. "come on (l/n)-san! everyone knows in order to find your soul mate, you have to show off your mark!"
"yeah!" the others giggled, agreeing in unison, and it felt wrong, kinda like glass in your joints.
"I don't have one." you said, and they all shut up, their giggles and laughter dying out, eyes widening and the girl holding your arm gasped.
she dropped your hand, and grabbed her friends and rushed off, whispering things before looking over her shoulder and turning back to her friends.
