you could do nothing but absolutely stare at the boy in the park and only hoped you looked like you were reading your book.
for the past few weeks, two times a week after your classes, you got coffee and something light to eat and walked to the park to sit on a bench and read a book. it was a great way to wind down mid semester, when stress was high and a lot of projects were due at the same time. but you liked the way the park sounded, and it was thick with vegetation and the trees all turned shades and hues of fire because autumn was here and it was your most favourite season of them all. people in passing were interesting and you watched how they moved and listened in on dozens of silent conversations in passing and it was the strangest thing but you loved it.
but mostly, you came to the park to stare at the cute boy who always sat in a bench not too far from you, and you wondered how one person so big could be so gentle and kind. he fed the birds sometimes, but mostly he had earbuds in and he watched the park, the way people moved and the scene in front of him. you noticed, of course you did, because he noticed and he was probably singlehandedly, the most attractive boy you had seen in quite some time and you didn't even know his name.
(you had always been faint of heart and that was not something you could do.)
his hair was pulled back today, long brown locks curled at the ends from the bun, and he had a scarf wrapped around his shoulders and the leaves fell and you fell too. maybe, just a little bit in love with the boy who seemed gentle and kind in the park, and you knew it was weird but for some reason, on the days he was there, the coffee tasted a bit sweeter.
your eyes widened when you saw a familiar face, walking down the path, and your heart shot into your throat because one sugawara koushi had planned to meet you at the park (he had agreed to spend the afternoon out with you) and the look of joy on his face made your small smile tense. you breathed in, seeing the way suga took a seat next to the boy, and they were in conversation, and when warm honey eyes met your own, suga waved.
he called you over.
your face went red, shifting all our things together and standing, coffee almost gone and book tucked under your arm, walking through the park and the leaves fell. you stopped beside suga, and he smiled genuinely. "(f/n), this is asahi, i've known him since high school."
you were flushed in the cheeks, and gave a small weak smile as you bowed and pulled your collar up more to ward off the knowing eyes of the boy. "hello asahi-san." the news that suga knew this boy wasn't a coincidence, and that was only confirmed when suga's phone buzzed loudly.
asahi's face went pale, and his eyes widened as suga stood up, answering the phone. it was daichi, and of course it was daichi and you leaned back and looked down the path to see the man and he winked at you and your face went too red.
you had been set up with the cute boy you had been watching in the park for two afternoons every week for the past month. "s-suga-san!" you stuttered when he rushed off, and your face was too red, and you swallowed hard as you turned back to the boy.
"have fun (f/n)! i did the hard part, at least you know his name!" your face went red and the boy stood awkwardly, rubbing the back of his neck and he was tall and his shoulders were broad and you felt tiny but strangely safe standing in front of him.
suga had long since run away and the park was quiet and you braced yourself as you looked up to his flushed cheeks. "would you like to have coffee, asahi-san?"
he nodded slowly, a small smile spreading on his lips. "i drink tea, but yes, yes i would really love to." he seemed so happy, elated as his shoulders sunk, and you hummed as he shifted his own bag onto his shoulder. the two of you walked in comfortable conversation, both stuttering and fumbling over your words.
you brought up the weather and he hated the cold and you loved it, but he liked the way the leaves looked and you liked barren trees. he pulled out your chair when you got to the small cafe in the park and he laughed, bumping his knees into your own and you assured him, it was alright.
and you fell completely in love with a gentle giant.
he smiled a lot, it was the way his face looked genuine and sincere, green tea in his hands and he paid attention when you spoke and you liked the way his hands nervously tapped on the side of the cup because your leg was bouncing, and this was exciting. he liked flowers and nature and you laughed, what were the odds, you worked at a flower shop and his face went red. "the first time i had seen you...you were planting flowers in the bed outside, and then um, i saw you in the park." he said, and you laughed, because he was endearing and so so kind.
"i only came to the park to admire the view asahi-san." his face went red and yours did as well, and you took a sip of your coffee and looked outside to the city in november.
"um...(f/n)-san, j-just to be clear, the i-intrest is mutual, right?" he asked softly, and you laughed, choking on your coffee and he gasped and rushed for napkins and you laughed when you started coughing. "oh my, i'm so sorry."
what kind of college boy says oh my?
you smiled, feeling heat spread in your cheeks because wow, he had shocked you and his face was red and you reached for his hand with a small smile and didn't hesitate to rub your thumb over the back of his hand. "yes asahi-san." you bit your lip and your smile was too grand and it was growing. "it's most definitely mutual asashi-san."
