Chpt 1 - The blue eyed boy
I blinked my eyes and open and squinted into the harsh white light that filled the room. My breathing was heavy and ragged as I struggled to make my eyes focus. Slowly, cautiously I turned my head to the side and rested my cheek against the papery sheets that covered the hard, uncomfortable mattress I lay on. My head pounded and my chest felt unusually tight. A heart monitor sounded next to my ear, beeping along with the drum of my heart. Tiny tubes pumped clear liquid into my wrist and a series of lights and patterns were flashing on the wall next to me.
I weakly turned my head to my left and then realized that I wasn't alone. There, in a leather chair, next to the mattress I was lying on, was a boy. He sat with his elbows propped up on his knees and his head in one hand, the other sifting through his blonde, tousled hair. He wore dark jeans and a white t-shirt, a light grey sweatshirt hastily draped over his shoulders. He looked defeated, defeated by some unknown force that I had yet to find out about. I breathed in sharply, taking in his warm, clean, comforting scent.
At this point he looked up, and hope flashed through his eyes.
"Beth?"
His mouth hung slightly open.
"Beth, you're awake!"
He exclaimed in a thick irish accent. His lips turned up at the corners slightly. 'Beth? Who's Beth?' I thought to myself.
I examined him carefully. His face was red and puffy and tears shined on his flushed cheeks. Dark circles hung under his eyes, as if he hadn't slept in days. His dark lashes blinked slowly over light, sky blue eyes, eyes that were filled with such love and emotion, I had to tear myself away from them. He leaned forward.
"You're back," He paused "..you're really back..."
He whispered, his eyes shined and he stared at me as if I wasn't real. A million questions raced through my head. Who was this boy? Why was I here? Did I do this to him?
He abruptly stood up and leaned towards me, throwing his arms around my weak, bony shoulders. My thin hospital gown gave me little protection form his lean, toned body. I tensed and he pulled away immediately.
"Did I hurt you?"
He asked, a frantic and startled look on his face. I looked back at him blankly and instantly felt bad, this boy obviously loved me, but I had no clue in the world who he was. I couldn't help it anymore.
"Uh, I'm sorry... But who are you...?" I stuttered.
His eyes grew wide and his jaw dropped open again.
"No. N-n-no. This can't be happening!"
He shook his head and tears started to well up in his light, innocent eyes.
"Bethany..."
He said, his eyes darting around the room in a panic. He swiftly looked back up at me quickly, as if by simply looking away, I would disappear.
"Its me! Niall?!"
He stuttered, the panic in his eyes growing. His chest heaved up and down and tears tumbled down his face.
"Please.."
I said, cutting off his desperate sobs. I grabbed his large, warm hand and held it in my small, pale one.
"I'm so sorry. If I could remember, I would." Tears began to prick at my own eyes.
He shook his head quickly and began to pace the room. Confusion fogged my mind. My head pounded. The beeping of the heart monitor began to race. The room began to spin and I struggled to fight the growing fog invading my mind. The room was a blur as people in white coats raced into the room. I felt a sharp jab in my arm as black clouded my vision.
