Chpt 2 - Moments
The sky was grey and clouded that early saturday morning. The buildings were a blur as we raced along the london highway. Rain pelted down onto the pavement as people holding black umbrellas trudged their way mundanely to work, their gumboots spraying up water as they walked. The world was dull. Our car began to slow as we drove off of the highway and further into the city. Music flowed faintly through the radio, the only sound other than the loud and incessant drumming of rain on our roof. I stared out of the window, head held in my hand, the other carelessly playing with a piece of my dark hair. The traffic lights flashed red, seemingly the only delicate piece of color that the world could muster, and our car came to a stop.
I turned my head to look at my mother and found her smiling warmly back at me. She reached forward and turned a dial on the dashboard, the music turned up immediately.
"Just to brighten the mood." She chimed
I smiled at her and returned to absent-mindedly looking out of the window. The lights flashed green and we were off again, maneuvering our was through the dark, grey city, our headlights illuminating the road in front of us.
As we neared a motorway our car began to pick up speed. Bright colored billboards, business buildings and yellow speed-signs past us in a rush. SLOW DOWN a illuminated sign flashed at us. A growing line of cars was beginning to form and impatient drivers trying to get to work honked their horns. Mum and I sighed in unison, looked at each other, then burst out laughing. Once we had both calmed down I gave another sigh of exasperation.
"We are never going to get to university in time."
My christmas holidays had just ended, and I was getting back to studying at uni. I would have drove myself but Mum insisted that she come to see me off, after all she wasn't going to see me for another three months.
It was then that I realized Mum was gazing at me, so much longing for me to stay in her eyes that I thought she might burst into tears. She gripped the steering wheel tightly.
"Mum, don't do that, you know I'll ring you every second day and skype you every chance I get." I said to her. She smiled weakly, and I swear she let a tear accidentally slip.
"I know, Sweetie...I know..." She replied.
A horn honked and I was snapped back to reality, whipping my head around, I saw that the car in front off us was far ahead, and we were holding up a long line of traffic. Mum gasped and accelerated forward.. too fast. Panic rose in my chest and the next few moments seemed to move in slow motion. The low blare of a horn sounded and seconds later a large truck appeared and was heading straight for us. Mum screamed and I drew my knees to my chest to shield myself. The car lurched and I was thrown forward violently, the seat belt knocking the air from my lungs. My ears began to ring. The screeching of tires screamed in my ears and suddenly shattering glass was slicing at my arms and face. My ears popped as the windows shattered. I could taste blood in my mouth and my head pounded. Mangled bits of metal flew past me in slow motion. And suddenly everything was still. The last thing I heard was a muffled shouting before the world became black.

I woke to the soft, melodic strumming of a guitar with an unimaginably beautiful voice singing along to it. Low and velvety, his voice was mesmerizing with each syllable, gliding over the words like a river. So dulcet, so soothing. I listened to the lyrics carefully, as he sang each word as if he meant it and it was meant for no one but me.
"Close the door, Throw the key...
Don't wanna be reminded...
Don't wanna be seen..."
His lyrics were filled with such desire and emotion, I could almost taste the salty, sweet, tearful vigor of each and every letter of each and every word. I felt an unknown emotion rise inside my chest, it was almost.... Recognition?
"Dont wanna be without you,
My judgments clouded,
Like tonights sky..."
I felt like I had heard; and felt these beautiful words before. I slowly opened my eye, my eyelashes fluttering and turned my head towards the artist who had so carefully painted this meaningful, delicate song across my confused, blank canvas. And there, on that same leather chair was the blue eyed boy. Guitar held gently in large hands, his eyes closed and feet planted firmly on the ground. A single tear rolled down his porcelain cheek and he blinked his sky blue eyes open to clear them. They were piecing and wavered as he gazed down at his guitar and I felt myself drowning in those sapphire lakes of his.
"Undecided,
Voice is numb,
Try to scream out
my lungs.."
He sang in a sorrowfully sweet voice, his eyes now closed again. I stared across at him and I felt my hands begin to quiver. Another tear slipped from his eye, and many more followed, although his voice did not waver. The feeling in my chest grew and I found myself murmuring the next words to his beautiful ballad.
"It makes this.. harder.
And the tears stream down my face.."
He abruptly stopped his harmonic strumming and let the tears fall freely. His face crumbled as he set his guitar down and hung his head in his hands. His face burned red as he stared down at his red high tops. I gazed at the helpless figure beside me and began to reach my quivering hand out to him. He looked up hesitantly as I rested my small, shaking hand on his sturdy knee. His large, desperate eyes stared into mine.
"Please.."
I croaked, and I was surprised to feel a tear fall from my own eye.
"...dont stop. That was beautiful..."
I finished. He stared at me and I saw a smile creep onto his face. He reached forward and wiped the tear from my wet cheek with his thumb. ...Niall... A voice echoed at the back of my mind.
"N-Niall.." I smiled weakly back at him and continued to speak, although my throat scratched and stung with every syllable. Niall jerked to his feet and stared at me disbelievingly.
"Y-You remember?!" He exclaimed. "You remember my name?!" He repeated, a broad, toothy grin appeared on his face.
I raised my eyebrows and nodded. I still hadn't got over his unmistakable Irish accent. It was rich, thick...brogue... and over all: beautiful. He ran a hand through his messy blonde hair, his brown roots showing through.
"I can't believe it..." He murmured, staring out of the window. I stared at him wistfully. He wore a plain red polo and a black and crimson snap back that was turned slightly to the side.
My eyes wandered to his sleek-looking wooden guitar.
"You're a wonderful singer." I complimented him. "You should perform."
Niall's attention snapped back to me and I saw his face fall and the hopelessness that I sighted earlier returned. I felt confusion fog my mind.
"You really are clueless, aren't you?"
He replied. I stared at him, a blank, confused expression settled upon my face, and my brows furrowed. He sighed an exasperated sigh and sat on the side of my bed. As he sat close to me, I was mesmerized by his eyes and in seconds I got lost in them. I gazed at the slashes of cobalt and cyan in his irises, and the midnight blackness that surrounded them. His dark lashes batted over his captivating eyes and he took my hand in his.
