Chpt 5 - Two little girls

"Impressed?" Harry spoke in a husky, slightly cocky voice.

I nodded quickly and grinned wildly at the boys I have come to know as 'One direction'.

"I can understand why you guys are such a big deal!" I exclaimed and my cheeks burned red as I realised that I was speaking to the boys that so many girls would kill to meet.

Another knock at the door was heard and I sighed, thinking it was another obsessed nurse. But before I could assume anything more, the curtain was pulled back and a tall, lanky girl with flaming red hair entered the room.

"I got here as fast as I could!" She stammered, her wide, hazel eyes darted around the room before resting on me.

"Oh, Bethany, I still can't believe you're back! You're really awake!"

She smiled, showing off her perfect white teeth. She wore a black t-shirt that said 'All you need is love' in bold, white letters, tucked into a pair of black and white, chevron, high waisted shorts. Her hair was tied into a bun, wavy trendils of red hair falling across her face. I smiled shyly back at her..

Moonlight washed over the hillside, casting heavy shadows around the entrance to the forest. The creek babbled quietly near by, glimmering like liquid star-shine as it fell into the river below. It flowed over the moss-covered stones, creating small white peaks and carrying small pebbles and stones along with it. The meadow lay beside it, a bed for dainty flowers, a playground for mischevious kids.

The two young girls ran through the meadow, the sleepy tulips tickling their feet as they played. Long, thick, red hair flew out behind the taller girl as she danced and spun in her green summer dress. Dark pigtails tied with pink ribbon and countless necklaces strung around her tiny neck, the smaller girl followed, giggling as she splashed through the creek.

They ran tirelessly up into the meadow once again and collapsed into the grass. It was late on a crisp, still summer-night and yet the girls did not tire. They sat cross-legged in the grass, picked flowers and made daisy chains for each other, talking and laughing with not a care in the world. The dark-haired girl's eyes sparkled in admiration at the taller girl and her tiny, pink lips were permanently curled into a smile.

Ruby

The word - no, the name, echoed at the back of my mind as I was tugged back into the present. I stared at the tall girl, she looked as if she hadn't changed a bit in the years that had past since that night.

"Ruby."

I spoke aloud.

"Thats your name, right?" I confirmed and saw her face light up. She lunged at me and in seconds I was engulfed in a bone crushing hug, which I was surprised by since her arms were so thin.

"I missed you." She mumbled close to my ear and her breath smelled strongly of coffee as it fanned over my cheeks. She pulled away and grinned at me. I smiled back, feeling comfortable and natural around her.

"So, how long are they keeping you in here?" She asked me, gesturing with her hands at the un-homely room that we were all crammed into.

"Two more days." Niall answered for me. I nodded and reached for the plain bread that the nurse had left sitting on the tray for me. It was only then that I realized how unimaginably hungry I was and I took a large, ravenous bite out of the bun.

"Is that all they are giving you?" Ruby asked, staring at the bun in disgust. I waved my bread in the air.

"This?"

"Yeah."

I chewed slowly, the soft bun felt more like shards of glass, cutting at my throat. I reluctantly swallowed and winced in pain, then nodded at her.

"God, I cant wait to get you home!" She exclaimed in a slight british accent. She ran her long fingers through her thick, ginger hair and sighed. She then reached into her cross-body and brought out a newspaper. She unrolled it and handed it to me.

"I thought you should see this.."

ONE DIRECTION SINGER'S GIRLFRIEND WAKES UP FROM COMA!

One Direction singer, Niall Horan, has been waiting for 6 weeks for his girlfriend to awaken from a tragic car crash that unfortunately left her in a coma. At 5:00pm yesterday evening, Bethany Strait awoke from her coma at London Hospital, London. A month and two weeks ago, Bethany was driving to The University of London with her mother, when an on coming truck collided into the front of their Toyota Corolla, supposedly killing her mother, and leaving Ms.Strait with a severe case of brain damage. Police are not convinced that Mrs. Strait fled from the scene, but have been unable to locate her body. Millions of fans have been crowded outside of the Hospital since yesterday evening, waiting for the famous boy-band; One direction to emerge...

I stopped reading half way through and stared dumb-founded at the crumpled-up newspaper that lay in my small, quivering hands. Images flashed through my mind. Images of blood and endless screams. My breathing became shaky and ragged I struggled to hold back the tears that began stinging at my eyes.

"Well, this explains a lot.." I muttered through clenched teeth, almost to myself. Scrunching the newspaper up, I threw it across the room, vigour lacing my words. Liam and Harry narrowly dodged the flying paper and stared at me with wide eyes. Zayn stood up abruptly. Niall shot out of his chair and took my hands in one of his large, comforting ones, then brushed away the tears that streamed down my hot, flushed cheeks. I jerked away from him and hid myself under the papery sheets, my desperate sobs muffled by the pillow.

"Beth, please talk to us.." Niall asked more than stated.

I clenched my fists together tightly and dug my nails into my palms. My stomach churned angrily and I felt as if I might throw up. I threw the sheets away from my burning, red face. "DON'T CALL ME THAT!" I yelled at him then immediately regretted doing so.

The hurt look on his face was quickly replaced by anger, not at me, but at whatever - whoever - had done this to me. His jaw clenched and the color drained from his face. His soft light blue eyes hardened to cobalt marbles and his fists opened and closed slowly.

"I need a beer..." He muttered bitterly and began to walk towards the white curtain that led to the never-ending hallways of the hospital.

Zayn glanced up at him and then stood up "And I need a cig..." He added, his face expressionless.

My mouth hung open slightly and I stared at them, unsure how to respond.

"Wait, Niall! Zayn! I didn't mean.." I trailed off and stared at them as they pulled the curtain back and walked away. Zayn looked back at me almost wistfully as he left, his dark eyes filled with concern.

But Niall didn't look back at all...
