Chpt 8 - Confessions

"Hello, can I help you?" The smiling lady at the front desk asked us as we walked into reception. She spoke in an oddly calm manner, although her eyes shimmered with excitement. I couldn't blame her, she was talking to one of the members of one direction, the currently hottest boy band in the world.

"Yes, thanks," Niall replied, leaning against the desk. "Would we be able to take Beth Strait out of a few hours?" He asked politely.

The receptionist played with her ponytail dreamily, practically melting at his words. "Who?" She tore her gaze away from Niall's lips and typed a few random numbers into the computer, scrolling down with her other hand.

"Bethany Strait." Niall repeated for her. The receptionist clicked the mouse once, twice and then nodded. "Sure, Niall." She said breathily as if she was back in high-school, talking to her crush.

"Thank you." I said to her as we went to walk out of the hospital doors. The receptionist glared at me as if I had taken her husband. I was taken aback at how fierce her gaze was. Niall grabbed for my hand and squeezed it reassuringly, which only fueled her anger. She grinded her teeth in pure and utter hatred.

"Have a nice day." She forced the words out of her mouth and her hands tightened into fists.

Ruby bit her lip. "Um, bye!" She called, smiling an awkward smile and hastily made for the automatic doors, Niall and I following close behind. I hopped around awkwardly on my crutches, not entirely used to them yet.

Niall looked at me apologetically. "I'm sorry, Beth, fans can be like that sometimes." He told me softly. I shook my head.

"Don't be sorry.. But I don't understand." I frowned and chewed at my lip. "I - we - why did she act she hated me?" I stuttered, in confusion.

Paul, One direction's body guard, who I had met earlier guarded us with his bulky build as we pushed through the crowd of screaming girls. "You guys can continue this conversation in the car!" He shouted over the top of the endless noise.

"I love you, Niall!"

"Niall, look over here!"

"B*tch, get away from my husband!"

The last comment honestly frightened me, but Paul protected us well, and any girl who got too close was pushed away immediately. Niall had somehow found my hand once again and was dragging me along, expertly navigating through the crowd. Ruby held my other arm, so that she wouldn't be separated from our little group. We ran the last few meter's (me hobbling as fast as I could on my crutches) to Niall's car, which was being swarmed by girls. It was crazy, a few teenagers had managed to climb onto the roof of his car and were holding signs above their heads. Paul scooped them both of by the waist and placed them on the ground, opening the back door for us. Ruby and I piled into the back and Niall got into the front, grinning like an idiot. He slammed the door, although checked to make sure he hadn't crushed any fan's fingers while doing so.

"Hehehe," He chuckled. He turned around to look at us in the back. "It feels good to be loved!" He squealed, changing his distinctive voice to a squeaky, nasal one. I laughed contagiously at how random he was.

Ruby looked at me, her eyes luminous. "Um, you asked us why the receptionist was so hostile towards you?" She said, referring to the question I had asked earlier. I nodded, eagerly, the smile disappearing from my face. "Well, I have to be blunt with you, Beth." She chewed her thumb nail. "There have always been rumours going around that you and Niall are in a relationship.." She looked at Niall for assistance.

A quick look of panic crossed Niall's face before he snapped his head away from our direction and looked out the front window, masking his embarrassment. I watched him through the side view mirror, and noticed that his face was a dark shade of scarlet. He sucked his bottom lip into his mouth, chewing at it furiously.
