Chpt 6 - I've lost my mind and my mother

The tears fell freely now, I didn't try to fight them. I just let the tears fall. Staring at the pulled back curtain where Niall had been seconds before. My chest rising and falling quickly. It could have been a few seconds, or maybe a few hours, since he left... I lost count of time.

Louis fidgeted with his hands and his sea-green eyes darted anxiously around the room, not daring to look at me. Liam sat, leaned forward, his chin resting in his large hands and stared at me; as if trying to figure out an unbearable dilemma. I searched his large honey-brown eyes for any form of accusation, but found nothing. Harry hummed almost silently to himself and ruffled his curls, slicking them back.

Ruby bit her lip and tears pricked at her eyes, she raked her fingers through her hair. Her cheeks flushed red.

"Beth - Bethany.. I'm so sorry, I didn't know.." She stuttered, then stopped herself and looked down at her perfectly manicured fingers.

Liam stood up and rested his hand on her shoulder comfortingly. Ruby buried her face into her hands.

"Dont worry, Ruby. Beth is just confused. I mean, its alot to take in when you have lost your mind and your mother." Liam reassured her.

I tilted my head to the side and frowned at him in confusion. I hadn't lost my mind; had I? Sure, I couldn't remember anything and had random mood swings, my head hurt and I got confused easily; but had I lost my mind? I wasn't so sure..

Louis looked up and watched my face intently. "Bethany?" He bit down on his lip, hard enough to draw blood. "Do you remember anything?" He asked me calmly, though he gritted his teeth.

I panned my gaze across the room and sighed in defeat. "I'm trying Louis; trust me; I'm trying.." I closed my eyes and tried to remember something - anything, anything at all.

My eyes snapped open.

"Ruby, tell me about my mother." I pleaded quietly.

Ruby blinked, her eyes wide and scared.

She nodded and rested her tote bag on the floor, taking Niall's place at the edge of my bed. She took a deep breath.

"You and your mother were very close. She never embarressed you in front of your friends or got mad at you for anything. In fact, she was more like a friend than a mother. I think its because she got pregnant with you so young... She was only 16 when she had you, and only 35 when she ... died..."

I knotted my hands in my lap.

"She loved you very, very much, Bethany.. Always remember that." She sighed.

I smiled and sighed, trying my very hardest to remember my mum. "Ruby," I motioned with my hands for her to lean closer. "Come here.." I said and wrapped my weak arms around her, pulling her into the biggest hug I could muster. I suddenly felt like I had known her for years, no,-I corrected myself- I had known her for years. She was my best friend.

"I'm hungry." Harry spoke up. I had forgotten the boys were still in the room with us.

Louis nodded. "Me too."

Liam stood up. "Well it is 2 hours past 12, why don't we go get some lunch?" Liam asked.

Ruby smiled at me and picked her tote bag up off of the ground.

"The doctor says you will remember the most small and random things, like tastes of your favorite foods, or different items from around the house, or even clothing. So I packed a little bag for you."

She grinned.

"It has magazines, a change of clothes, lots of different things." She shrugged her shoulders. "You could have a look through them while we get lunch?" She offered. I nodded and took the bag from her.

Ruby and the boys stood up. "We'll be 30 minutes at the most." Ruby warned and blew me a kiss. My cheeks grew pink, I smiled and blew her one back.

I peered at the tote bag, itching to find what was in it. It was made of a soft fabric and was a cream color. I grabbed for it and thrust my hand inside, as if it where a lucky dip. I felt something cold, hard and rectangle and brought it out, realising it was an iPod with ear-phones attached. I eagerly turned it on, put the ear-phones inside my ears, and chose a playlist titled one direction. As the songs played through my head, I found myself humming to one or two of them.

I reached my hand into the bag again and brought out a brouchure with the words Nando's © in big red letters across the top. I lauged lightly at the funny looking rooster, perched above the letters and began to read the food descriptions, one by one.

The almost barren car-park was dotted with few cars, as we walked towards the reastraunt. The delicious smell of warm meals, sauce and fries enticed my senses as we got closer to the reastraunt. I turned my head to find I was beside Niall, Harry and Ruby, who were laughing and smiling as they told dry jokes and talked about what they were going to order.

Harry held the door open for us and bowed as we thanked him. But the moment Niall neared the door, Harry let go and the door swung back, almost hitting Niall in the face. We all burst out laughing and Niall made a fist, struggling to stay serious, but failing and burst into laughter.

The four of us took a booth in the corner and our waitress squealed when she came to take our order. Niall and Harry happily signed her note-pad and sent her on her way, along with our orders, of course.

I sighed happily, proud of myself for remembering a scene of my life, plus the taste of food.

'I would kill for some Nando's© now..' I thought wistfully to myself.

I set the brochure down and picked out a change of clothes from the bag. There was a grey t-shirt and a colorful pair of aztec patterned flowy shorts. I nodded approvingly, I couldn't wait to get out of this papery hospital gown. I glanced at the en-suite and delicately picked myself up off the bed, reaching for the crutches that rested against the wall. Slowly making my way to the bathroom, clothing in one hand. I changed out of my gown and into the comfortable clothing, but struggled to get the cast that gaurded my leg through the leg hole of the shorts.

Once I had finished and was rested comfortably back in the bed (well, as comfortable as you can get in a hospital bed), I reached eagerly for the bag again. I pulled out a stack of magazines, and began to fill myself in on all the gossip I had missed these past 6 weeks.

After a few minutes, I was bored of the confusing information about stars I had never heard of and went for the bag again. I found a pair of black sunglasses with a pink and green floral design on it, which brought back brief memories of golden beaches and blue skies, waves lapping at the beach and laughter from the familiar people around me.

I reached for the tote bag again and pulled out a hair brush, a ribbon, lip gloss and mascara and set them down beside me, I would make myself look presentable later. The last item inside was a small compact mirror. I stared at the intricate design, so carefully etched onto the lid of the mirror, then pressed the small button to open it.

I stared into the small mirror. A pale faced girl with luminous, dark eyes and plump red lips stared back at me. A small bandage was stitched to her temple and a large, deep cut ran from her cheek and down her chin, then all the way down her neck. Her dark hair was scraped into a messy bun that looked as if it had been that way for weeks and she had weak bony shoulders. The girl was me. And I was a mess.
