Chpt 14 - I was a mistake

Not bothering to ask if I could come into her room, I plopped down on the bed next to Ruby; the bed barely sinking under my weight. I didn't know where my sudden burst of boisterousness and confidence had came from this morning. If this were any other day; I would never have dared to joke about Ruby and Liam's breathlessness. Usually I would've peeked my head around the door, and asked politely if I could enter her room. I had no idea why, but today was different.

Ruby lay intently staring at the ceiling, her arms sprawled across the bed and her legs wide open in the most un-ladylike fashion possible. She pouted, sucking air into her mouth and puffing up her cheeks, then letting out an exasperated sigh. She brought her clammy hands to her flushed face and wiped her brow. I bit down on my bottom lip, which I had found to be a habit.

"Rubes?" I attempted. "Are you alright?"

Ruby was silent. She narrowed her eyes, exhaling dramatically. After a minute or so, she let her head fall to one side so that she was facing me and pressed her lips together tightly.

"Yeah, I'm fine. I'm just hungover..." She pressed a palm to one of her eyes, and squinted through the other at me. She wore a floaty vibrant blue dress with a high neck-line that had faint illustrations of peacock feathers all over it. It ended mid-thigh; showing off her near perfect legs that I envied so very much. They were shapely and tanned, and her toe-nails were painted to match her dress. Her hair was up in a sleek pony-tail located at the crown of her head that trailed to just below her bust. She was sporting a very natural makeup look with baby-pink lips and had applied blush to add some color to her cheeks. She grunted quietly and rubbed her eyes, smudging her brown mascara slightly.

"So how long have you and Liam been together?" I asked, hoping to lighten the mood. She grimaced slightly and sat up, folding her arms over her chest and crossing her legs. "Is it that obvious?"

I perked an eyebrow. "Yes.. Is it supposed to be a secret?" I tucked a stray hair behind my ear. She cocked her head to one side and frowned. "Sort of. We didn't really want the media to find out.. We've both seen how rumours spread by the media and hate can ruin a relationship - we dont want that to happen to us." She told me.

I nodded in understanding. I surprised myself as short, fleeting memories crossed my mind, reminding me of how ruthless the media and public could be. "How did you two come together?" I questioned, pulling the long sleeves of my white superman sleep-shirt down to cover my knees; which were now drawn to my chest.

"Well.. when you got into the accident and went into a coma; I was devastated. You are my best friend and I couldn't lose you after all we had been through together." She swallowed hard, staring down at her hands. "Like what your Father did to you.. and all the hate I had been getting from the fans and the public when I started hanging out with the boys. To when you became famous and I had to sort of teach you the ways of ignoring the rumours and getting to and from places without being mobbed. I just couldn't lose all of that." She explained.

"My friends and family could see I was becoming depressed; locking myself in my room all day and eating everything in the pantry. I was turning down the modelling jobs I was being offered and I wasn't looking as fit or healthy as usual. Liam would call me up everyday, just to make sure I was still alive; since I was becoming suicidal. The only thing that stopped me from commiting was the thought that you would wake up, and I wouldn't be there to see it.

One day I didn't answer my phone and Liam freaked out; so he came over to check on me; and found me passed out on the kitchen floor. It had just proved to be to much for me one day, and I had turned to alcohol. He picked me up and tended to my every need for the next few days, answering my phone calls and talking to me. He was the only person I had actually, propely talked to since.. since.." She swiped at her eyes frantically and I reached for her hand, letting her know she didn't have to talk about it if she didn't want to. "He was basically my rock." She added.
