I arrived at school on time, and took my seat beside Isla. I took off my jacket and hung it from the back of my chair. The teacher strode in not long after and began his daily lecture on how important of district was for the Capitol, and how we should be proud of serving the Capitol. This lasted for well over an hour, before he moved on to the uses of coal, the dangers of coal mining and how most of the boys in this class would grow up to be coal miners. After this dreary speech, he moved on to something we had never heard about. Revolution.
"Once, over one hundred years ago, the districts formed an uprising, against the Capitol who cared for them. They were unable to overthrow the Capitol, and instead of annihilating the districts, the Capitol was generous, and let the districts live on. But, as a consequence for their uprising, the Capitol said each district must offer up a child of each gender, between the ages of 12 and 18 to go into an arena and fight to the death. This would be known as the hunger games." He explained.
"There were 75 years of peace between the Capitol and the Districts, until another revolution began. This time it began with a girl, who the Capitol had been kind enough to crown Victor the year before, and her husband, who had been crowned victor alongside her."
Two victors? I thought, that's not possible, and how was this girl married already! Why had the Capitol let them both live?
"This girl, betrayed the Capitol and spurred on the Districts. The Capitol fell. But the Districts only survived for 10 years before the Capitol was able to regain power. The a Hunger Games were reinstated, and all Revolutionists were killed."
A shudder rocked my spine as my hand shot up. "Yes Cinder?" The teacher asked
"Sir, why did the Capitol allow them both to win?" I asked, confused
"Well Cinder, they threatened to eat some poison berries if one of them had to kill the other, they were very much in love. The Capitol let them both live, only to be betrayed by both of them."
My hand went up again. "Yes Cinder?" He asked again, a hint of annoyance in his voice.
"Sir, what was the name of the revolutionists?"
"Peeta and Katniss."
