These are the Ajanta Caves located in India. Built around 100 BC (the earliest of the caves), its re-discovery was something short of amazing. A British officer was hunting tiger in 1819 when he accidentally found the entrance to Cave 10, which at that time, the fact that it was mostly unvisited and undisturbed had allowed the forest to grow back and cover the caves.
What makes these caves so fascinating are a myriad of different things, specifically, the fact these caves are all carved out of the side of a mountain. All artistry statues, or carvings of any kind were all done by digging out the side of the mountain and removing the rock.
The entire cave system and its interior are done ALL by the process of rock removal...the same rock...the face of the mountain.
Even more interesting is its formation, which is a horseshoe shape.Having this formation for the caves makes it ideal for different kinds of Astronomy. For example, how on earth did ancient man have such a perfect knowledge of astronomy, let alone stone masonry Another question that comes up is how did these ancient people carve what they had with the ancient tools they had? i dont even know if modern man could replicate such perfection. Heres a picture of its interior below.
The two above pictures are of Cave 26, one of the most interesting "caves" ive read about. notice the window in the one? Its not just for letting in light, but a specific type of "light". On the spring and summer solstices, this cave as well as one on the opposite end, the sun lines up perfectly with this window. The beam of light then Illuminates a Stupa that has a Buddha inside.
Why?
Why go through all that painstaking work? How did ancients know the solstices so well that they were able to line them up on their caves...and keep in mind, There literally no room for error on the caves when its one peice of solid rock your working with. So keep in mind how utterly complex it must have been just to CARVE out the caves...and then somehow you get them to line up with the Solstices
i mean, those feats alone are beyond impressive. how was ancient man able to accomplish this?
Below is a quick video of the Ajunta Caves, in case you would like to see more detail and see how the solstices were designed to work as part of the caves design.
