An ancient city found in the depths of the ocean...
I truly wish there was more for me to report on this as its completely fascinating and it leads me to wonder how many other ancient civilizations exist underwater and why its taken this long, just to find Heracleion..
Found 6.5km from Alexandria's coastline is a city that no one ever expected to find....it was but a rare mention throughout ancient texts and inscriptions. The City of Thonis-Heracleion.
Stumbled upon by french diver Franck Goddio, he was only attempting to find many of Napoleon's warships that had sunk in these very waters. But what he ended up finding instead was mind-blowing! 2300 years ago, something had happened that remains undocumented or undiscovered that eventually plunged this place underwater. Even now, divers are still pulling up the remarkable finds such as 16 foot statues, gold pieces, 64 ships and 700 anchors!
But what was more important than all of that, the a massive temple to the god Amun-Gereb, as well as tiny sarcophigi (sp?) with animals that may have been used as sacrifices.
Built with waterways that flowed thru the entire city, one could conceive how it may have looked 2300 years ago as an Egyptian Venice.
The one thing that really interests me are the finds there, its not so much the statues as it is the Hieroglyphs found...totally preserved in the water. As more and more things become discovered, its the steles i want to truly know more about and what they say....
Until more is known and published, the list of things that the public know about are scant. For example, ive heard that they have been trying to excavate this site for the past 7 years..(possibly 12) before it was made public last year.
So until were told more about it, speculation remains high as well as hopes of what a 2300 year old time capsule could tell us of an ancient culture that was swept away by the seas.
