Quick Disclaimer: This research was done before History Channel's Curse of Oak Island aired. As the seasons went on, i have added some things that were discovered, but i have not seen beyond Season 2. I did put, near the bottom of the article, where i started to document some of what was found on the TV show. However, i have put a "Spoiler Alert" message so if you havent watched the show, i wouldnt ruin it for you. (i highly reccommend checking this out!)
Looks simple doesn't it? From the surface, its a hole filled with water. Nothing special right?
Wrong!
This "Hole full of water" is on a tiny tiny spit of land in Canada called Oak Island. The way the hole derived its name is practically a personification.
In 1795, 18-year-old Daniel McGinnis, after observing lights coming from the island, discovered a circular depression in a clearing on the southeastern end of the island. Adjacent to the clearing was a tree with a on one of its overhanging branches. Daniel McGinnis, with the help of friends John Smith (in early accounts, Samuel Ball) and Anthony Vaughan, excavated the depression and discovered a layer of a few feet below. On the pit walls there were visible markings from a pick. As they dug down they discovered layers of logs at about every 10 feet (3.0 m). They abandoned the excavation at 30 feet (9.1 m).
Over 200 years now, many other peoples have tried to dig to the bottom of this pit, names such as future president Franklyn Roosevelt, literally draining their life savings in the process..dubbing it the Money Pit. What makes this such an oddity? Well, you have to ask yourself the question of...why on earth would someone find an unihabited island (at that time, of course), dig a hole and place markers and logs every ten feet....whats at the bottom?
Thats a question for later on though, as more oddities appeared on future excavations. such as a mysterious stone marker with an ancient unknown language scrawled across it. This stone was found in future generations excavations at a depth of 90 feet (the farthest down ever reached was 202 feet, but ill get to that reasoning in a second)The stone tablet itself has gone missing, but a record of its symbols remains. Until now, the consensus is that the symbols are a code translated as; "forty feet below two million pounds are buried."
But Keith Ranville thinks this may be incorrect. As this earlier translation states, it can get any treasure hunters wildest imagination running. Below is Mr. Ranvilles alternate theory that also includes sister island, Birch Island.
