Just 12 miles from the southernmost tip of Lake Titicaca in Bolivia, lies, what some archeologists to believe, the oldest discovered ruins in the world, Tiauanaco. Where do i even begin with this place?

Lets start with the fact that this site is at an altitude of 13,300 feet and is 800 feet above Lake Titicaca. At one point, many archaeologists can agree that this had to be, in the distant past, a flourishing port city. That would mean the lake has receded 12 miles and dropped 800 feet since then. All can agree on one thing for sure, the lake is evaporating since there is literally no sources that run from or to it. Its one of the real mysteries of Tiaunaco, how did the water even get there? And another stranger fact, how did the population at this site thrive as it did when your at a nearly unbreathable altitude of 13000 feet?

Before i get to the more mysterious parts to this site, there's still some general information id like to add to help you understand more about it. At its peak (not altitude, but a time in civilization), the site was believed to home up to 100,000 people. This would cause a huge demand in being able to feed such a population which would seem more than difficult when it came to growing crops at 13,000 feet. At night, the ambient temperature drops and causes a frost, which kills most plants.

How did the ancient people combat this major problem? Recently, an aerial survey revealed this vast maze or grid of canals throughout Tiaunaco visible only because of the color of the underlying soil. That still doesn't answer the question, "How were crops planted and harvested successfully at an altitude of 13000 feet?" The answer is something short of genius!
