Another beautiful site in Peru!
What is it about South America that has so many beautifully and masterfully constructed ancient sites and yet still be so steeped in mystery as to who constructed them, why and more importantly, how?
Machu Picchu is no exception! Located 80 km Northwest of Cusco and 2300 feet above sea level, This ancient site is one of the most visited in all of Latin America and the most visited tourist attraction in Peru. Here you will see that stone construction again, almost like what you can see in Tiahuanaco but minus the T shaped clamps. The walls are fitted together so perfectly that a blade of grass cannot even get thru to it.

Regardless of what the rumors may be, Archeologists struggle with this question still today. The Incans here at Machu Picchu had no written language, so no records were ever left. The archeologists have been left to piece together what little bits of info they have to figure out exactly...why was it built, what purpose did it serve and why was it vacated so quickly?
Some History

So how they transported such large and heavy stones from the quarry is another mystery, especially since there were such steep grades at some points. But im getting ahead of myself...i just wanted you to imagine, and look at the picture below, and imagine not one wheel used for engineering or transportation!
