Connor's alarm went off and he sat up, reaching over me to turn off his alarm.
"You go back to work today, don't you?" I asked.
"Yeah." He sighed.
I pulled his face to mine and kissed him. "Go get dressed."
He claimed off the bed and walked into the bathroom, running his fingers through his hair, getting it out of his eyes. I heard the shower start.
I grabbed my phone off the bed side table and clicked on the screen. I saw a black and white picture on me and Connor. It wasn't my phone, but I still stared at the picture, smiling.
Connor came out of the bathroom, wrapped in a towel. "Why do you have my phone?" He asked.
"I thought it was mine. How long have you had this as your wallpaper?" I turned the phone, showing him what picture I was talking about, though I'm sure he already knew.
"Since we got back together last year." I sat up and handed the phone to Connor. "What do you want for breakfast?"
"Nothing."
"I'll bring you some yogurt." He left and returned with a yogurt, a spoon, a glass of water, and my pill. "I'm gonna head out now. Don't stay in bed all day."
"I'll get up in a minute." Connor walked around to my side of the bed and kissed me. "Bye."
"Bye." He grabbed his keys and left the apartment.
As I said, I got out of bed. I threw away my yogurt cup and took my pill. I looked around, wondering what I could do with my day. I knew Connor wouldn't be happy with me if I sat on the couch all day and He had kept the apartment pretty clean the past few days. So, I decided I would go to town.
I threw on some jeans and a shirt and grabbed my shoes and jacket. I grabbed my apartment key and my wallet and left. Connor had taken the car to work, so I was left to either walk or find transportation. I decided to take a bus to the shops.
I walked in and out of store after store before I saw a small shop selling jewelry. I wasn't one to wear jewelry, but I decided to look anyways. I looked around, it was mainly rings and necklaces. I was about to leave when an older woman stopped me.
"Can I help you find anything?" She asked.
"I'm just looking. Maybe getting something for my boyfriend." I was polite. She tapped her finger on her chin.
"Wait here." And I did. She disappeared into the back of the store. "Have you ever seen a blue butterfly?"
"I haven't." I responded. "I've only ever seen pictures of them."
The women opened her hands and revealed a black and blue glass butterfly. "I thought of this when I saw you." She said. "You have the same eyes as my son."
"Do I?"
"Yes. He had eyes that were a dark gray with long lashes."
"Had?" I questioned.
"My son.. My son jumped off of the Bridge. It was sudden on a cold December day."
"My god." I said, thinking about how similar his story was to mine. "I'm so sorry."
"It's fine. He's happier now." She extended her hand, offering me the glass butterfly. "Here. Take it."
"How much?" I asked.
"It's free."
"I must pay someth-"
"For my son." She insisted with a smile. I took the glass butterfly in my hand.
"Thank you." I said, before leaving the store. I mindlessly walked for the next hour or so. When I looked up, I saw the Bridge. I hadn't been here since last year, it was kind of an unspoken rule I had with myself to never go to the bridge again.
I allowed my mind to wander and my feet to take me where they pleased. I walked to the middle of the bridge, just like I did last time and placed my hands on the railing. I had no intentions to jump, but my mind kept screaming at me, Do it! Do it!
I had closed my eyes, willing the thoughts to go away. My phone vibrated in my pocket. I picked it up and saw Connor's picture. "Hello?"
"Hey, Jamie. I just got back to the apartment. Where are you?"
"Why are you home so soon?"
"My boss let me off. Said he'd call if he needed anything. Where did you end up today?"
"Uhh.." I hesitated, wondering if I should tell him. "I'm on the bridge."
He paused. I heard nothing coming from the other end. "What are you doing there?"
"I don't know. I just kinda ended up here."
"I'll come pick you up."
"Okay. I'll see you soon, then?
"See you soon." He hung up the phone. almost ten minutes later, I saw him walking towards me. I wanted to go to him, but I couldn't get my feet moving. Instead, I stood up straight and held out my hand, which he took. "What's happening?"
"Some shop lady told me about her son who jumped off this bridge and I.. I just..." He moved to stand between me and railing. "She gave me this. Said I had the same eyes as him." I held the blue butterfly in my hand.
"She just gave it to you?"
"Yeah. Insisted that I take it without payment." He took if from my hands.
"It's pretty."
"It is."
He looked at me. He held out his other hand and I took it. "Let's go home."
