I walked along the bridge alone, tired, and hungry, I had not bothered eating anything on my way out of the house. I had no reason too. I had no plans eating again. My stomach growled. I ignored it. It would all be over soon.
It was December 11, 2012, the two year anniversary of my best friends death. The death I had caused. I was 18 at the time, about to turn 19. I was now 20, the same age at which I had killed my friend. We promised to do everything together and this was no exception.
When I approached the middle of the bridge, I walked over to the railing and leaned into it with my elbows. It was a particularly cold day. I had made sure to wear my nicest coat. I guess someone had noticed, but I hadn't noticed them. I was lost in my own thought. I was thinking about the scars on my body, the last time I had been drunk, and how I was going to fulfill my promise to my best friend.
It wasn't until he had started speaking that I noticed he had walked up beside me. "I don't know about you, but my hands are freezing." He spoke.
I looked blankly at him before I finally spoke. "What?"
"My hands." He spoke again. "I lost my gloves and I need to buy new ones." He smiled. He had a nice smile. It fit him perfectly.
I looked down at my hands. I didn't need the gloves I was wearing. "Take mine." I said, pulling them off. They were black leather gloves that I had paid $20 dollars for.
"I couldn't do that." He said.
"It's fine. I won't need them for much longer." I handed them over. I looked at my hands, flipping them over to reveal my wrists. Scars poked out of the top of the sleeves on my coat.
"I'm Connor, by the way." He held out his hand and I took it, tugging the my sleeves down.
"Jamie." I turned and started to walk away. I shoved my hands in my pockets in embarrassment.
I stopped when I heard my name being called out. "Jamie?" I stopped and turned on my heals. "I hope I'm not being too forward, but would you like to grab some coffee?"
I stood in shock for a moment and smiled when I realized he cared. "I would, actually." I walked back over to him and we took off to the nearest coffee shop.
We sat in the old diner, drinking coffee. "May I ask what you were doing on that bridge?" Connor asked.
"Honestly?" I asked and he nodded. "I was wondering how cold the water was. What about you?"
"I was on my way to work, but my boss called and told me I didn't need to come in." We were silently sitting there for a few moments when Connor leaned forward. "This may sound weird, but you are extremely handsome."
I nearly choked on my coffee. "I'm sorry?"
"No, I'm sorry, it was-"
"No, no. It's fine. I just didn't think you were..."
"Gay? I'm not, I'm bisexual. Are you..?" He was calm and collected, not taken off guard by anything.
"Oh, yes. I'm gay."
"Do you wanna hang out? Or do you have something to do?"
"I have nothing to do. I don't have a job." We ended up paying for our coffee and we left to walk around the streets. I took him to my apartment. It was a small apartment, but it was the one my parents had gotten me when I graduated college. My parents had my whole life planned out for me, so I never had to worry about money until I was kicked out of the only house I had ever known.
"This is your place?" Connor asked.
"Yeah, my parents are paying for it to get me out of the house." I unlocked the door and invited him in. My dad was willing to do anything to keep an embarrassment like me out of his sight. "You want a drink or anything? I have some beer I stole from my dad."
