I pealed my eyes open and stretched out my legs. I was on the couch and the TV was playing a random movie on one of the movie channels. I hadn't realized I had fallen asleep. As I sat up, combing the hair out of my eyes with my fingers, I glanced at the clock on the TV box underneath the Tv. It read 5:00. Connor always called me at 5 because it was he when got off of work and he would tell me when he was going to be home. He never missed a call.

I reached for my phone that was sitting on the coffee table and clicked on the screen to see if I had missed his call. My phone showed no missed calls, but it showed that the time was 5:40. I decided to call Connor and see where he was.

It rang twice before I heard, "Hey, babe!" on the other end. "I know I didn't call, but I got my paycheck today."

"Awesome." I said.

"Are you okay?" He asked with a worried tone. "You sound different."

"Uh, yeah." I said. "I'm fine, I just woke up."

"Have you been in bed all day?"

"No, no. I fell asleep on the couch while I was watching a movie."

"Well then, I'm taking you out tonight."

"You don't hav-" I started to protest, not wanting him to spend off of his money on me.

"No, I don't, but I'm going to anyway. Take the bus and meet me at the fountain at 6:30"

I agreed as Connor's mind was made and I knew that there was no way around it. I got dressed and took the bus the the fountain that was in the square. I was about 10 minutes early, but decided to wait for Connor by the fountain.

I was surprised to find that he was already there, holding flowers. When he saw me, his face lit up like a child in a candy store. He was always really cute.

"Hey, babe." He said when I got close enough to hear. Connor wrapped his arms around me and hugged me so tight. He was the one to break the hug. I didn't want to let go, I had been missing him all day when he left for work. He handed me the flowers. "I got these for you. They're your favorite."

They were white daisies, held together by a single rubber band. "Daisies." I said. "They must have been expensive."

"They were worth every penny. You're smiling." I looked away from the flowers and into Connor's eyes. "I love seeing you smile."

"Come here." I said and we both took a single step towards the other and I pulled Connor into a kiss. "I love you." I said.

"I love you, too." He replied. He grabbed my hand and sat us down on the side of the water fountain.

"Fucking fags." I heard a guys voice.

"I fucking hate faggots." Another one said. I saw that it was coming from two guys who were walking past us.

"Excuse me?" Connor said. He always stood up for himself and others around him, even when he should just stay quiet. "What were you saying?"

I stood up and started towards the guys. "Connor, stop." I said, trying to pull him back, but he shook free of my grip. " Say it to my face." He continued. "Come on, Man up." I sat in horror as I witnessed what happened next. The taller of the two guys moved swiftly as his fist collided with Connor's ribs. Connor hunched over in pain, gasping for breath.

I jumped to my feet and ran towards them. "Connor!" I screamed. "Connor!" He held onto me when I finally reached him. "Are you okay?" He nodded. I turned my head to see if the guys had left, but instead, I felt a solid object strike my nose and top lip. Two hands grabbed my shoulders and threw me to the gound. I was repeatedly kicked in my stomach, head, and back.

"Jamie!" I heard my name being called. "Jamie!" It continued. "Stop! You're hurting him!"

"That's the point." I heard many people yelling many different things. I tried to open my eyes and maybe understand what was happening, but I couldn't. I felt a sharp kick to the back of my head.

I heard sirens in the distance and that was when the kicking stopped. I was finally able to open my eyes when I felt a gentle touch on my shoulder. I saw Connor sitting next to me.

"Jamie?" He whispered. I reached out and grabbed the hem of his shirt as that was the first thing my hand found. Connor gently placed his hand over mine and whispered. "It's okay. They're gone. It's just me. it's okay. I'm right here. It's okay."

The sirens continued to grow closer until Connor was removed from my side by an EMT, his shirt and hands covered in red blood. The rest is mostly a blur. I remember hearing 'broken ribs" and "possible spine."I then remember seeing people hover over me in both the ambulance and the emergency room.

When I woke up, I heard the beeping noise of my heart monitor with every beat of my heart. Everything was blurred and I had to blink a few times to bring everything into focus. As I looked around, I noticed I had been moved to a private room. It was dark outside, so it came as no surprise that I found Connor asleep in a chair next to the bed.

"Connor?" I tried to speak, but coming out in a whisper. "Connor." I spoke louder in a rough, raspy voice.

Connor lifted his head and looked in my direction. "James." He called me by my real name. He grabbed my hand and held it with timidness, not wanting to hurt me. "How are you feeling? Are you in any pain?"

"A little." Connor pushed a button on the side of my bed and a nurse in blue scrubs walked in. She took my vitals and gave me some pain meds, warning me that they would make me feel tired and that I should get some more rest. After the nurse left, I asked Connor, "What happened?"

"When those guys attacked you, they broke two of your ribs and gave you a massive gash in the back of your head. They doctors had to shave a patch of hair off to give you stitches, but don't worry, you're still pretty handsome."

I smiled, but quickly remembered that Connor was attacked as well, "You were attacked, too. Are you okay?"

"I'm fine. I got a nasty bruise, but that's it. They took out their anger with me on you." I wanted to say something. "Get some rest. It's one in the morning."

"Cuddle with me." I said, hoping he wouldn't leave my side.

"Okay." He said with a smile. He climbed onto the bed next to me, careful not to move me in anyway that would cause me pain. I grabbed his hand and held it as he fell asleep. I felt comfort in knowing that Connor was with me and that he wasn't going to leave.

The medicine started to kick in soon. I didn't want to fall asleep as I watched Connor as he slept so peacefully, but I let myself fall asleep when I couldn't possible hold my eyes open anymore.
