We were walking down the sidewalk, heading to Mandy's house. Emmy stopped a few times to pick up random rocks she thought were pretty. After a while, her bag was filled with rocks, all looking the same.
"Emmy, are you going to keep all of those rocks?" I asked.
"Of course! Each one is special. That's Andy, that's Chandler, that's Kay Kay, that's Bob." She went on and on, telling me the names of her rocks which seemed never ending.
After she finished naming her rocks, we drifted off into silence.
Which didn't last long. "When I grow up, I'm gonna go on the road, eat some donuts, and have a couple of babies. You know, asexual reproduction. I don't need a man."
"Um, Emmy? Asexual reproduction is only for plants..."
"Duh."
"Okay." I dropped the conversation and continued the walk to Mandy's house. We were only a block away.
When we got to the door, Emmy knocked on it, but not you're average knock. She knocked the beat of the itsy bitsy spider. Usually, Mandy would answer the door after the first few knocks, but today Emmy was able to knock the whole song.
"Aww she didn't answer. Maybe I should knock again." Emmy raised her hand to start knocking, but I hurriedly grabbed her hand and shook my head.
"Maybe we should just text her." I suggested.
"Ok." She pulled out her phone and sent a text to Mandy, leaving us standing on her porch and waiting for a reply. I walked over to the porch swing they had and started rocking back and forth. Emmy sat on the porch railing, waiting for a reply.
Ping
The sound was Emmy's alarm for any incoming texts. She quickly unlocked it and checked the message.
"What did she say!" I asked. She checked her phone and burst out laughing. "What happened?"
"Oh sorry. Ryan just asked what was for dinner." She locked her phone and starting making faces at her rocks while I thought about the time she made me a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. The end result was just two pieces of bread on top of each other.
Ping
Emmy had received another message, hopefully from Mandy.
"Is it her?" I asked.
"Yeah." She scanned the phone with her eyes and scrunched her face together in confusion.
"What'd she say?" She handed me the phone and I read the message.
I'm not gonna be in school for a few days. I need to be alone. Don't worry though, I'll be okay. And please don't tell Jen.
Now it was my turn to be confused. Mandy never shut us out. She was always the one comforting us when we tried to shut each other out. I felt the need to help her for all the times she helped us.
"You know what we need to do right?" I asked Emmy.
"Go get food? My stomach thinks that's a great idea." She started down the stairs of the porch, but before she got far, I grabbed her arm and pulled her back.
"No. We need to break in and help her!" I said. It seemed drastic but, we had too. Something must've seriously happened and Mandy needed someone right now.
"You want us to be burglars!?" Emmy yelled.
"No no! We're not gonna take anything, we just need to get in so we can help Mandy." I desperately tried to get her to understand because at this rate, the whole street would think we were burglars.
