Chapter 2: His Return

When I heard his voice, I ran through the school doors and around the corner. The fact that the bell was about to ring didn't even phase me. I just had to make sure that he didn't find me.

But like always, luck was not on my side.

"JENNIFER!" His voice was getting closer and closer until someone grabbed my arm, making me turn around!

I turned around to see Chance Bradley, schools golden boy. He was really smart and everyone loved him. He was also on the football team, cliche huh?

Anyway, he never talked to me so I was caught off guard. I was relived nonetheless since Chance grabbed my arm instead of, him.

" Whoa there! What were you doing, running a race?" Chance asked jokingly.
He gad a full blown smile. I never really noticed how perfect his teeth were.

'Snap out of it!' My inner voice yelled.

" Oh...um... I was trying to get to homeroom before the bell rang." I replied trying to hide my nervousness.

'Perfect Jenny. That wasn't suspicious at all.'

Apparently Chance noticed my lie. He looked like he was trying to read my face while one of his eyebrows were up.

He didn't question it though.

" Oh ok. Well can I walk you to class?"
Of coarse I wasn't going to turn down that question. He was kind enough to ask and this will help keep my mind off of , him.

"Sure!"

He walked me to homeroom and even sat beside me. I was wondering what provoked his new actions.

My morning classes went by fast. I guess I was so anxious to get to lunch, that my mind wasn't completely there. It didn't matter anyway, since we were just getting to know the teachers and going over the syllabuses. I was nervous that he would be in there. I wasn't ready to face him yet.

When I walked in the cafeteria, I immediately found Mandy and Emmy. They were chatting about something.

I sat down and said my usual greeting of ' hi guys' and started to eat my apple. I noticed that Chance kept staring at me from the corner of my eye. I however, didn't notice the person I've been trying to avoid.

I guess I spoke, well thought, too soon because as soon as I finished my apple, he came into the cafeteria.

He locked eyes with me and started to walk my way. Once he reached me, he bent down to whisper in my ear.

"Can you come in the hallway? We need to talk." He whispered.

I really didn't want to talk to him, but I agreed anyway.

As we started to walk out of the cafeteria, peoples' gazes snapped to us. I hid my face as my pace quickened. I had to hurry and get out of there.

We finally reached the hallway and he started talking.

" Jennifer, I called you earlier, but you ran away."

"Seriously Max! Did you ever think that I was ignoring you for a reason?" I was yelling. He was making me mad so fast it was crazy.

"What did I even do?" He was getting mad like I did something wrong.

" Oh let me think. You were kissing a girl who lived across the street from me. Then, you looked me in the eye and jogged around the corner!" Tears were starting to cloud my vision.

"I'm so so sorry Jennifer. I understand if you don't want to be with me anymore."

Through my tear filled eyes, I saw the look of guilt on his face. Confirmation that it was all true and that my eyes weren't deceiving me.

"I forgive you, but I can't stay with you. Have a good life." After that, I ran out of the building, crying all of the tears that were held inside. I took a seat on the bench at the back of the school, in the garden. It was a place I would come to think.

As I was sitting, I heard footsteps from behind me. I quickly turned around thinking it was a teacher, but it wasn't. It was Chance.

"What are you doing here?" I was really curious.

"I saw Max come inside without you, so I went to check up on you. You weren't in the building so I looked outside and Ta Da! Here you are!"

That last part made me smile. He then sat down.

"So, are you going to tell me why your crying in a garden." Here comes the questions.

"I just broke up with Max. I don't feel like telling the reason right now though."
I honestly did want to tell someone the reason, but I just started talking to him today.

"Oh I understand."

There was a long pause, but then he spoke up again.

"Do you want to go somewhere after school?" That question took by surprise.

"Where exactly would we be going?"

"It's a surprise!" What harm can honestly be done. He is the golden boy after all.

"Fine." I sighed in defeat. The way his eyes lit up at my answer made me happy again.

The rest of the day went by fast. All I could think about was the secret place Chance was taking me. Excitement took over me. The last time I was this excited was the last day of junior year.

" Jenny! Wait up!"

I turned around and saw Mandy and Emmy running towards me. They probably wanted to know why I didn't come back to lunch.

"Hey guys. How was your day?"

"It was fine until someone ran off, making us think you were killed or something!" Of course Mandy was the one to say that. She was always jumping to conclusion.

"That's one active imagination you've got there." I point to her forehead.

"Stop avoiding the question!" That time was Emmy.

"I'll explain everything later, but I have to be somewhere right now."

"We'll be waiting!" Mandy replied singing.

I looked around for Chance until I saw him leaned up against his car staring straight at me. Kinda creepy.

I walked over and waved. He flashed a smile then got in the car. I did the same.

"Will you tell me where we're going now?" I had to ask. He might answer.

"Sure. We're going to............."
