The closer I got to my locker, the more I squinted my eyes. I didn't know if I was prepared to face him yet but I knew that I would have to sooner or later.

"Hey Jenny," the voice said surprising me. I opened my eyes fully and saw Ryan standing in front of my locker.

"Hey Ryan. What are you doing here?" I asked. He was leaning against my locker with his hands around his back. "And what're you hiding?"

"I just came to see my friends. Is that a crime?" He challenged, quirking an eyebrow.

"Well a grown man visiting a high school because he wants to 'see his friends' does sound a little suspicious." I joked, placing a questioning hand on my chin for added effect.

"Ha ha. I'm only two years older than you."

"Two years and five months months." I said, chuckling. He soon joined in and we stood there laughing. This reminded me of those times when we were little—Emmy, Ryan, Mandy and I— and we would all just randomly burst out laughing. As soon as one started, the others followed suit. Those were the days.

"I was just about to go find Mandy to see how she's been with the whole...you know." He said, trailing off at the end.

"Yeah, she pretends like it doesn't bother her but I can tell it does." I leaned against my locker and blew out a heavy sigh. "She's at her locker with Emmy probably."

Ryan nodded his head and smiled, walking away. "Stay safe." He yelled over his shoulder.

"You too buddy." I replied, knowing fully well that he couldn't hear me.

I put some of my books in my locker and headed for class.

When I went inside, everyone stopped what they were doing and stared. This was starting to get annoying. I took the time to glare at each one of them before stalking to my seat with a deep scowl on my face.

"Looks like someones been being a bad girl." I froze in my seat and looked up to see Max leaning over my desk. He had this lustful yet deranged look in his eyes that creeped me out. He wasn't always like this. He used to be sweet and charming, but now...now I didn't know who he was.

Maybe this is the real him.

The thought lingered around as I turned away from him.

"What do you want Max." I bit out.

"Why the hostility?" He said, feigning innocence. "Is it because of what happened with Mandy?"

Chills went up my spine as I watched him lean in closer, temporarily cutting off my air supply.

"Watch out Jennifer."

With that, he walked back to his typical seat in the back of the classroom and left me alone with my rampant thoughts.

Throughout the entire period, I felt his lingering stare on my back making me uneasy. Just breathing the same air as him was making me nervous, not knowing what he would try next.

Thankfully, the bell rang and I bolted out of the classroom into the hallway. I didn't care where I was going, just as long as it was away from him.

"Whoa!" I looked to see Chance holding my arm to keep me from falling. "Deja vu?"

I stepped out of Chances hold and regained my balance, looking around the hallway to see if Max was still there.

"Jennifer? Are you ok?" Chance asked, gripping my arm softly as I continued to look around. "Jennifer, did Max...do something?"

I looked at Chance once I knew the coast was clear and shook my head at his hushed, worried tone.

"I'm fine. He just tried to shake me up." I said, trying to wipe away his look of concern mixed with rage. "I'm serious."
