It's snowing.
I can see the flakes falling sedately outside the frosted-over window. The fire crackles in the fire place, sending waves of heat through the cabin's main room. Up here in the mountains, it's peaceful and quiet. There's no one around to bother or disrupt this moment. I snuggle deeper into the pile of blankets on the couch and press my nose lightly into his chest to ward off the lingering cold. I smile into his sweater when his arm tightens around my shoulders, pulling me closer. His feet are propped up on the coffee table and I can see the tips of his socks peeking out from beneath the blankets. They're the fuzzy ones I got to match mine. I take a slow, deep breath, catching a whiff of his cologne mixed with the smell of the half-empty cups of hot chocolate sitting on the coffee table. I sigh contentedly.
"Jensen?" I ask quietly.
"Mmm?" his voice resonates deep in his chest and I can feel it.
"Sing to me?"
He clears his throat and begins singing "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" softly into my hair. His thumb rubs slow circles on my arm as he sings, sending shivers down my spine. I close my eyes as I listen to his deep morning voice, placing my hand on his chest to better feel the deep vibrations resulting. I wish I could stay in this moment forever...
"Melody?"
I blink my eyes and realize I had zoned out. I'm back in the crowded room with all of my awkwardly normal aunts, uncles, and cousins. Jensen's gone, along with the rest of the daydream. I've been staring at the ceiling for the last little while- I've lost track of time completely. I bring my gaze back to eye level to see that it was one of my cousins who so kindly interrupted my perfect daydream. He's looking at me with a strange expression.
"Hmm?" I shift my back against the wall.
"You okay?" he asks.
"Fine," I manage, voice cracking a little.
He's normal. I can't let him know I'm different. It's already awkward enough. He stares at me a moment longer before nodding and gravitating towards someone else. In this moment, the daydream version of me sobs into Jensen's ridiculously soft sweater with the realization it'll never really happen. I'm stuck in a dull world full of people who just don't get it.
Ugh.
Reality.
