David’s POV

It had been a great walk home yesterday after school. Louise was such a lovely girl; so open and kind and caring. I felt like I’d known her for years as I walked with her yesterday despite that being the first day we’d actually spoken properly. I also found out that she doesn’t live that far away from me – only about ten minutes’ walk! So when I dropped her home I asked if I could walk with her to school today and I’m happy to say she gladly accepted that invitation. I got to hers twenty minutes before school and we walked together. I had to be honest, it was great to have someone to walk with and I just felt so comfortable walking with her! I don’t know for sure but I think there are some feelings there…

“So I had to cover my eyes with concealer, I feel like a panda!” Louise laughed. Her laugh was enough to make me laugh but at the same time I was always so mesmerised by her beautiful face when she smiled I could barely do anything but stare.

“Well you look fine, Louise! Don’t worry!” I smiled back, using my charm. She grinned shyly back at me.

“Aww thank you, David!” She giggled. “I always think I look like a mess, so it’s nice for someone to say differently!”

“Not just anyone!” I smiled. “But me, and I’m difficult to please!” I winked. I could see her cheeks blush. I know you may think I’m just trying to get in her pants, but I assure you it’s not that at all! It’s the way I talk when I’m nervous and want to impress someone, alright?

“Louise.” Conor’s voice said from behind me, bringing me back to reality.

“Oh, hi Conor! How are you?” She wiped a tear from her eye. It was so easy for her to get into a fit of laughter…

“Good thank you. How are you feeling?” Conor asked her, sympathetically.

“I feel like I’ve walked into a door and I had to use so much makeup to cover the bruising, but other than that I’m alright!” She smiled that smile that always caught me. I turned to face Conor.

“Hey mate, you alright?” I smiled at him but his gaze didn’t even move. It was like he was pretending I didn’t exist. What is his problem? Luckily the bell went before I said what I really thought.

“Right guys, I gotta go. Got a quick meeting with Mr Gregory before Science! See you guys at lunch?” She waved as she walked off. I waved back.

“What’s your problem?” Conor’s hot breath made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. I was in trouble. I turned round slowly until I was facing him.

“Sorry?” I asked as politely as I could. Inside I was fuming. What was his problem?

“You and Louise. What’s all this shit?” His face was screwed up, his jaw was clenched… If I didn’t know any better I would say I wasn’t going to get out of this lightly.

“What do you mean? We’re just friends. We’re just talking!”

“No. It doesn’t work like that. The first day of detention you were happy to be on Josh’s team, now you’re Louise’s best friend? She doesn’t need you. She has me!” He snarled.

“She doesn’t have you! She’s never mentioned your name… And who was it that walked her home? Oh yeah, ME!” Conor snarled as he grabbed me round the throat and shoved me into a locker.

“You stole that opportunity from me!” He shouted.  “The one person I trust in this place and you feel the need to steal them from me?”

“I didn’t steal anyone!” I shouted back, pushing him away from me. “She chose me over you!”

“She wouldn’t do that!” He shoved me back.

“She barely knows you exist…” I sneered.

“She doesn’t need you! Leave her alone!” He quickly looked around, noticing he was making a scene and slammed me one more time into the locker before letting go and walking away silently. I coughed and spluttered, clutching my throat.

“Looks like you need some help…” Josh said slyly, walking up and helping me straighten myself out. I pushed him away quickly.

“I don’t need anything from you!” I spat.

“Ha.” He smiled evilly. “I mean I could drop into conversation with Louise that you just chickened out when Conor confronted you, or we could get back at him when we’re in detention. She’ll see how strong and noble you are…” Don’t ask me why, but I was falling for this hook, line and sinker. I really wanted to impress her and make her see that I’m better than Conor!

“So what are you planning? I’m not saying I’m going along with it, but I’m willing to hear you out!” I asked carefully. I didn’t want to say something that could be taken as a verbal agreement to his terms and conditions…

“It’s easy! I’ll get a ‘friend’ of mine to tell Conor that Louise is spreading rumours about him saying they are a couple and he’ll storm in to shout at her and you could stick up for her and say it was all fake and you heard them plotting it and you’d save her! She’d see how angry he was and how calm you were and think you were so much better than him!” I played what he said out in my head and it sounded so easy. It was obviously someone Josh didn’t mind getting hit by Conor, as soon as I ratted them out they’d get Conor on their ass!

“And it’s that simple? No contract with you?” I had to ask. He was one of those people who could have your life signed in a contract you didn’t even know existed he knew how to get round people in this school. One of the reasons he was so popular…

“Who do you think I am?” Josh laughed. “A contract?” With tears rolling down his cheeks, he slapped his hand on his leg. “Oh, you make me laugh you guys!” He patted me on the shoulder and walked off. Frank lingered behind.

“One thing…” Frank whispered to me before punching me full force in the stomach, causing me to double over. “Don’t tell anyone about this deal!”

I looked up to the sky and prayed.

‘Dear God. Please let this work out alright!’
