Conor's POV

I paced up and down the hallway, every thought going through my head. He must be alright. He has to be alright. I'll never forgive myself if he's not. I was meant to be looking after him - ever since that day with Josh all those years ago I tried my hardest to watch his moves and save him from any problems, to stop him getting hurt. Now I'm in a hospital.

"I got you this..." A familiar voice said from behind me. I turned round and saw Louise holding two cups of coffee. "You really need to sleep. Go home, I'll call you if anything happens."

"I'm fine." I said shortly. There was no way I was leaving my brother's side.

"It's been two days, Maynard. Go home." Despite the situation I stood in now, Louise calling me by my surname still got to me. It made me feel happy, like I was back when everything wasn't so complicated.

"I'm fine, Redford." I said back and I saw a small smile appear on her face. We sat down on the spare chairs in the corridor and I sipped on my coffee. The caffeine kicked in within seconds; my eyes widened, my heart sped up.

"Conor..." Louise broke the silence after a sip of her coffee. "What have you said to your mum? Did you tell her the truth?" I looked down at the floor.

"I had to. The police will be getting involved... Again..." I shook my head. "Your boyfriend has caused me nothing but trouble."

"Conor, you know I'm only with him to stop you and your gang getting arrested!" Louise exclaimed. Of course I knew the reason, but the thing that bugged me was, as long as he was around, Louise couldn't be mine. I wanted to be able to wrap my arms round her and show her how much she meant to me, but instead I had to hold it in and act like we were friends because of him...

"Conor Maynard?" A doctor walked into the corridor, looking left and right. I stood up quickly.

"Yeah, that's me." I walked up to him. "Please tell me he's alright?" The silence that I incurred straight after felt like an eternity. My heart sped up, my chest felt tight, my hands sweaty. Please say he's fine. He's not dead. He's not permanently damaged from it. Say these words to me!

"He'll be fine!" The doctor said with a smile as Louise walked up to me, stood by my side and rested her head against my arm. "Just a few things that will take time to heal. We're going to keep him in tonight to monitor him but he could be released tomorrow." The doctor offered a sympathetic smile.

"Ah that's great news!" Louise squealed as she flung her arms round me and pulled me in for a hug. It was the first proper contact we'd had since we kissed; I could feel my skin tingling and my stomach doing flips. I threw my arms around her and placed my hand behind her head as I pulled her into my chest. It felt so warm and comforting; it felt like someone was finally there for me, like someone was willing to stay around despite knowing the real me.

"Can we go in and see him?" I questioned and the doctor nodded, pointing to the room to the right of the next corridor.

"Of course. He's still quite sleepy because of the drugs we had to give him but he's fine." The doctor smiled.

"Thank you so much..." Louise said with so much feeling in her tone. It was weird to hear. Noone had ever cared about my brother, or me, for a very long time...

"CONOR!" I heard my mum screech from behind me. Louise and I turned round at the same time to see my mum standing with two policemen either side of her. "What is the meaning of this?" She stormed towards me and slapped me across the cheek. The sting was a familiar feeling.

"Mrs Maynard!" Louise said as she walked in front of me to block my mum from hitting me again. "What are you talking about?" My mum was breathing heavily.

"These policemen turn up at my door talking about a fight and say you're involved?!" She pointed at the policemen by her side.

"Mum, it was only a little fight at school! This guy David was beating up Jack and I had to step in..." I said, hoping this time everyone would just go 'oh alright then' and carry on with life. After all, it was nothing; Jack was going to be okay and David wasn't dead, so that was good for him.

"I'm not talking about this one at school! A person called up the police and said you and your gang attacked them in a park?" My mum looked away from me, avoiding eye contact. "You're in a gang? Conor I thought you were better than that! How could you?" My mum screamed at me, attracting the attention of everyone in the corridor.

"Madam, this really needs to be discussed at the station." One of the policemen said and I felt my stomach drop. Police station? I don't need this. No way. I can't go to the police station.

"No." Louise said and the policemen looked bemusedly at her. "He isn't going anywhere! He didn't do anything!"

"Madam, I don't think it's anything to do with y-" Louise quickly interrupted the policeman.

"Bullshit! I was there! I got beaten up! Conor was trying to save me so get your facts right before you go storming around making accusations and ruining families! You have one job so why don't you do it right, you pricks!" They stared at her, gobsmacked.

"You shouldn't talk to police like that." Someone in the corridor said. I rolled my eyes.

"She's right." I shrugged. "I was there, yeah, but the only people I hit were the ones beating up my friends... I believe that's called self-defence?"

"Either way, Sir, we need to take a formal statement. What the caller told us is different to what you're saying so we need a detailed account." The policeman tried to be nice.

"Then won't you need to take us both down?" Louise questioned. The policemen exchanged glances. "And can't this wait until Conor's seen his brother who is in the room right beside us?" It hit me like a tonne of bricks. How could I let this stupid police matter get in the way of seeing my brother? The guilt rushed over me.

"Please. I need to see him. It was all my fault. I should have protected him from David." I pleaded with them. I could feel my eyes prickling, I could feel the lump in my throat grow. I hadn't felt this way in a long time. I felt like I was going to cry.

"I'm sorry sir, this is of utmost importance to us, you need to come with us right now..." The policemen walked towards me but Louise stood in the way of me.

"Let him see his brother." She ordered. "Five minutes."

"I'm sorry, madam, we need him to come to the station now. Conor Maynard, you do not have to say anything but it may harm your defence if you do not mention when questioned something that you later rely on in court. Anything you do say may be given in evidence." My heart pounded out of my chest.

"I just want to see my brother!" I fought their grip. "Let me see my brother!" I struggled but their grip only tightened.

"You'll make it easier on yourself if you come quietly!" The policeman said. I looked Louise in the eyes.

"Tell me how Jack is, yeah?" I asked her and she nodded quickly.

"Conor, I'm so sorry!" She shouted as they pulled me out of the hospital. "I'll get him back for this!" We both knew who'd made this call. He wasn't going to get away with this. Louise would get him and then I'm going to finish him off. I'm not going to be happy until he's six feet under. The police shoved me in the back of their police car and drove me to the station. They walked me into a small box room with one of those two way mirrors and a small table and chairs with a recorder on it.

"Conor, just be honest with us here." The policeman said as he sat down and pressed record on the tape recorder.
