Chapter 4: Best thing I never had
My eye couldn’t help but twitch at this announcement.
“Isn’t it great!!” She squealed again.
“Sure…” I started to walk out of the corner.
“Wait Zayn,” she held onto my arm, “I want you to meet him.”
Oh joy…
“Zayn…” She whined.
I said that out loud?
“I want you to approve of him. You’re the only person whose opinion matters to me.” She put on a convincing smile.
Jade’s relationship with her parents wasn’t the best, and she was an only child. I couldn’t resist her pleading eyes.
“Okay.” I finally agreed.
“Thank you! Thank you!” Jade threw her arms around my neck and I put mine around her waist.
“Anything to make you happy.” I said into her hair.
She pulled away and smiled at me.
“Toby’s lucky to have you.”
I blushed at the fact she said I’d be a good boyfriend, not that she said Toby.
“Soo,” I said looking around, walking to Drama class, “Who is he?”
“He doesn’t come to this school, his name is Christian.”
“Not in school……?”
This is the only high school in this area of Bradford…
“He’s…in…college…”
“What!?”
“Bye Zayn!” She said running off inside.
Our teacher was saying something about ‘stage-blocking’ but I couldn’t help but think about my fate. I was supposed to meet Jade’s college boyfriend after school. How did they even meet? I leaned over to ask her.
“Hey Jade, how did you mee-“
“Mr. Malik,” The teacher’s loud voice interrupted me.
“Could you come up here and demonstrate stage-blocking.” The man continued.
“Okay…sure...” I said, getting up.
He handed me a copy of the extract we were working on. I followed the stage directions and finished the monologue.
“Very well done.” He said reluctantly.
I nodded and returned to my seat.
“You’re really good you know.” Jade nudged me.
I shrugged.
“Seriously I think you should audi –“
“Can you just let it go.” I snapped at her.
I didn’t mean to, but I still wasn’t in a good mood. And I wasn’t going to give Domonic the satisfaction of calling the play a fag-farm. I balled my fists. Sometimes I wondered if Jade was worth the day- in, day- out mocking and discrimination I’d receive if I just showed my face.
Sometimes I’d even think back to the night the lies started to see if there was a loophole. But of course, there were none.
“Zayn…” Jade’s standing figure said above me, resting her hand on my shoulder.
“Time to go.” She said, swaying her hips while she walked out.
I had to close my eyes and breathe. For a short time I had to take asthma medication to control myself but my family found it and thought I actually had asthma.
