'Sorry, is there a problem?' I asked her as I walked towards the front door, frowning. What the hell was a social worker doing on my doorstep.
'Not a problem, simply checking up to see how life at home is for you and your daughter Janay Brown. She had a little fall... correct?' I nodded slowly and she looked at me, her expression illegible.
'What has that got to do with social services? Children fall all the time and hurt themselves, I still do it now.'
'Her fall was quite serious Miss Brown, and could have been quite fatal. Do you understand why we look into this more cautiously?' I raised my eyebrow and shook my head.
'I'm not quite sure what you mean, she fell and hurt her head thats the end of the story.'
'But how did she manage to fall under your care?' She asked and I swallowed hard, this was similar to the police grilling me not a social worker simply 'checking up' on Janay.
'I'm sorry but what are you insinuating exactly?' I said mocking her tone and she cleared her throat, straightening her posture.
'Nothing Miss Brown, I'm just doing my job.'
'Well my daughter is well cared for and she's never been or will be neglected. I put her to bed and she came out, not being able to sleep and she fell down the stairs. It was an accident. Now if you'll excuse me I've got things to do.' She smiled warmly and folded her arms.
'Sure, I'm sorry to have kept you. Have a nice day Miss Brown.'
'You too.' I said before walking inside and closing the front door behind me. Dante came out of the front room frowning and I shook my head.
'Social Worker, did you tip me off or something?' I asked and his expression turned from concern to anger.
'What the fuck is wrong with you?! You think I'd do something like that to you?' I shrugged and walked past him, seeing Chloe sitting down on the sofa and she smiled briefly.
'Tammy, I don't know who told social services some bullshit but it sure as hell wasn't any of us so stop treating us like the enemy.' I rolled my eyes.
'Oh please Dante. I'm sorry I'm just stressed out. I don't know what to think. I was drunk whilst looking after Janay do you even get how guilty I feel?' I said and he sighed, his face softened as he hugged me.
'Tam, we've got your back okay? No one is gonna take Janay from you.' He said, reassuring me.
'I sure as hell hope so because otherwise I have nothing left.' I said and left the room, I went upstairs and laid down on my bed, staring at the ceiling. How had my life reached this point it was at? I always wondered where I'd be if I'd never gotten pregnant the first time and how different my life would be as well as my family. Taylor would still be here, my mistakes wouldn't have caused her to reach the low dark point that she did.
My room door opened as my mum entered and gave me a warm smile, I returned it as she sat at the edge of my bed.
'Janay's coming home today love.' I know, I was over the moon but I just couldn't express it in the right way. I got ready to leave as Adrian arrived outside and mum walked me to the car. We drove in silence all the way to the hospital as I barely uttered a word.
Once we reached inside the hospital and to the correct floor he broke the silence.
'Why you so quiet anyway?' He asked, nudging me. I shrugged and he sighed.
'Come on Tammy, talk to me.' I shook my head, although it was eating away at me I just had to ask him.
'What is it?' He urged me to tell him, looking at me.
