"Morning, Riley." Said Sophia, walking in the next morning. Sophia was Riley's new Maya. She knew that Maya couldn't be replaced but she often felt that they were the same person because she didn't know that they were. She would have Sophia pick her up in the morning and they were best friends. Sophia made sure that Riley wouldn't speak too much about Maya by changing the conversation. This morning was particularly awkward as Maya and Cory exchanged a look, Maya being unable to reach Cory's pupil but only the whites within his eyes when she tried to say 'good morning.'
"Good morning to you, also." He said back to her. Maya was now able to tell Topangas knowledge of her secret by way that she looked not at her, but into her.
"I'm so glad that you made it here safely."
"She always does." Said Riley, unaware of the meaning behind the words to three of the five in the room. Topangas eyes were slightly wet at the sight in front of her. She was looking at a dead child. She was looking at someone she had gotten to know after already knowing so well. The girl she knew for years. Her daughters best friend. The girl she had watched and helped to grow up. It was her. It was Sophia. Sophia was Maya. Someone who no longer existed but was standing right in front of her with a fake name, slightly died hair, a bit more prominent cheekbones, and slightly different clothes. She turned away and went back to putting the dishes on the sink.
"Why's everyone acting so weird?"
"We're not and we're late." Said Sophia, grabbing her hand and bringing her out of the room.
