Word had spread quickly. From the moment that Maya had stepped out of her apartment, she was being called names and slammed against walls. On her way to history, she was kicked hard in the shins twice, causing her to limp into class. Lucas gave her an angry, hateful look.
"I'm sorry Lucas, I had to. I didn't want to lie to you. I swear." She turned and walked to her seat and Cory began to teach. Notes landed on Mayas desk faster then her heart could beat once. All nasty things, saying mean things about her trying to use a fake identity and how she was going to get all of the abuse that she would have had in the time she didn't get it. Maya put her forehead it her hands. It was so much and the threats were terrifying. It was worse then before. She thought about her mom and how if she hadn't had died, she wouldn't have had to move back with her grandmother and suffer this.
Lucas got a note passed to him to pass onto Maya. He turned to his left to look at the distressed girl, realizing why she hadn't told him. She ran away for a reason and she didn't tell him for the same reason. He opened up the letter.
Two and a half years are gonna catch up with you. You won't miss a second of pain. I promise that we'll make it up to you.
He closed it and stuck it in his poket. He ripped out part of a page in his binder and scribbled on the back of it.
You're beautiful and you don't deserve these threats.
He plopped it onto her desk, being picked up by Cory half a second later. He read it and then put it down on Mayas desk, continuing to speak. Maya had stopped reading them but the fact that Cory approved of it made her wonder. She carefully opened it, hoping that it wasn't a mean letter from Lucas, too. Lucas watched as she looke confused for a moment but only looked back up at the teacher, though she still looked surprised that it was not a bad note.
It was decided that it would be best if she went home after that because of the threats. Maya didn't understand any of it. How had it gotten so far? Why did people want to possibly kill her for doing absolutely nothing. The threats were mostly if she told anyone about the bullying. To many people, it appeared that she had. She was about to leave the school when she felt a hand slip over her mouth.
"Don't make a sound."
