Chapter 4

The next day...

Riker POV

When I got to gym class, Kayla ran up and hugged me tight.

"Whoa! Hi!" I said, hugging her back.

We finally pulled apart, and started our warm up jog around the gym.

Our gym unit was now yoga. I don't understand how that's a unit, but whatever... After our jog, we each grabbed a yoga mat, and lined up. Our teacher put up a projection on the wall, and we were supposed to copy the poses.

Let me just say, I'm not flexible. I think part of it is because I have long legs. I can't touch my toes without bending my knees, and if I'm sitting down, I can't touch my toes like that either.

I was sitting next to Kayla, and she was apparently very flexible. We were supposed to be touching our toes right now. I was reaching forward as much as I could. But I was a good 8 inches from my toes. There was no way I'd get there anytime soon.

Kayla could grab her whole foot, and her upper body was almost parallel to the floor. Wow, that girl's flexible...

Finally we switched poses. That previous pose hurt so much in so many places...

We were now standing up, balancing on one foot. The teacher was barely paying any attention to us. Phones are more important apparently.

I didn't notice what Kayla was doing until she'd done it. She'd reached over, and poked my side. I was ticklish, so I lost my balance, and almost fell over. She was smirking at me. I rolled my eyes, and smiled, getting back into my position.

When gym was over, I changed in the locker rooms, and then went to physics. Kayla was already there. I sat next to her at our lab table.

Today we were doing a lab, which I hate. I hate all labs because I have no freaking clue what I'm doing!

We had to tie a ball on a string, and then tie it to another string, and then light one string on fire, and it had something to do with what would happen, and how high the ball on the other string would go. Apparently we could figure it out with certain measurements...

I was lucky I had Kayla as my lab partner. She knew what she was doing, and helped me through it. We were supposed to answer questions about it for homework.

Lunch...

Kayla POV

I sat at a table in the back. I watched as Riker walked in the cafeteria. He went over to his group of friends. He looked like he was arguing with them or something, but I wasn't sure.

After a few minutes, Riker looked really frustrated. He'd pointed over at my table a few times. He finally turned around, and walked over to me. His face was really red, and he looked annoyed. I looked up at him, wondering...

"If you're wondering if I'm ok, I'm not. Those stupid people over there are going to totally kill me, socially. I'm positive I'm going to get shoved against lockers and picked on until the rest of the school year."

I stared at him until he looked at me.

"Sorry... I'm just frustrated. I used to sit with them, though I have no idea why... They basically control the school. They're the most popular, and they didn't like me sitting with you because you're the new girl. But I'm allowed to sit with whoever I want, and they didn't like that. So I'm kicked out from their table and social group, and now they're going to destroy me... But I don't want you to feel bad. This isn't your fault or anything. It was all my decision, and I'm glad I did it. Those guys are jerks."

I smiled at Riker. That was the sweetest thing anyone's ever done for me.

"So um... Could you help me with the questions for physics? In case you haven't noticed, I kind of suck at that class..."

I nodded, and took out my physics lab sheet. We worked through the questions together, and we finished in about 15 minutes.

"So, when are you free to work on the project? Today?"

I nodded.

"Great. Is your house ok, or not yet?"

I nodded.

"Your house?"

I nodded again.

"Cool. I'll come by after school... Actually, I'll probably walk instead of taking the bus home."

I took out my phone, and texted Riker.

"Can I walk with you?"

"Of course!"

Later...

Riker POV

Since Kayla and I had English together last period, after the bell rang, we just walked home together. When we got to her house, we worked on the project for an hour. Her mom let me stay for dinner again, and then I went home.

"So where are you every day?" Rocky asked, sitting down on his bed.

"What do you mean? I go to school like a normal person."

"No, after school. Lately, you've been gone all the time."

"Oh. I was at a friend's. We're doing a physics project together..."

"Who's your partner?"

"A girl named Kayla."

"Ooh..."

"Ooh, what?"

"Somebody's in love."

"Rocky, I'm not in love."

"Sure, you're not."

I sighed.

"Rocky, she's just a girl."

"Then why is she your partner for the project?"

"Because she was assigned as my lab partner, and that's how the partners for the project were chosen."

"But you're over there all the time!"

"That doesn't mean I'm in love!"

"You slept over her house that one night!"

"Well... Yeah. So what?"

"So ha!"

"Ha, what?"

"You like her."

"I do not!"

"Then why'd you stay over?"

"Because it was snowing, and it was late, and I couldn't ride my bike through all that."

Rocky narrowed his eyes at me.

"You like her, and I know it."

I rolled my eyes.

"Fine, you can think that all you want. But that doesn't make it true."
