Chapter 15

Riker POV

When I walked in the front door, my dad was standing there with his arms crossed.

Well this isn't good...

"Riker Anthony Lynch, get your butt upstairs! I will talk to you in a minute!" My dad said, scaring me with his facial expressions.

I hurried up the stairs, and sat on my bed.

"I'm going to die. Save me!" I texted to Kayla.

She sent me a smiley face, and waved to me from her window.

Then my dad showed up.

"What's this?" My dad asked, holding up my 58.

"My physics test..."

"Why'd you get a 58!?"

"Because I'm bad at physics."

"Did you study?"

"Of course I studied! I just suck at it!"

"Alright, so how many other things have you failed?"

"I don't know... Not very many..."

"Not very many? Well explain your 68."

"My 68?"

"That's what was on your report card that came today."

Crap, I forgot about report cards...

"You need to make a big change in your behavior with physics. You need to study harder, and get your average past an 80. Your brothers and sister can do that! Why can't you!? And you have a 74 in math! Are you just not trying anymore?"

"No! I am! I'm just bad at it! I can't help it!"

"Well you can study more, ask your teacher for help, or get a tutor! You need to make changes in what you're doing so you get good grades. Colleges look at these things, Riker. I need you to care about these things!"

"I do! I'm sorry! It's just hard!"

"Well let me make it easier for you. Until your mother and I start seeing some good grades, things are going to be different around here."

"Different how?"

"I want you spending all your time studying, doing homework, or doing your chores. I don't want you going over anyone's house or playing videogames or anything like that. You need to get good grades, Riker."

I sighed.

"So either study, do your homework, or go do your chores."

"What about meals and sleeping and all that?"

"Well obviously you can still do all that. I just mean I don't want to see you watching TV or anything else like that."

"Ok... Is that it?"

"No. I want to know when all your tests and quizzes are, and I want to see the grades you get for everything. You can show me every night at dinner. And if you get a bad grade, you'll be punished."

"How?"

"I'll take things away."

"What could you take away? I'm not allowed to do anything else!"

"Get a bad grade, and find out."

Yeah, I choose no...

My dad left.

Well that wasn't quite as bad as I thought it'd be. There wasn't much yelling. But my punishment sucks! I can't see Kayla anymore!

Unless...

"Dad!" I yelled, running down the stairs.

"Riker, careful! Mom's mopping the kitchen!" Rocky yelled.

It was too late. I slid on my heels, and fell hard.

Right. On. My. Tailbone.

"OW!" I yelled, flipping over onto my stomach.

I felt the soapy water soaking into my shirt and pants.

"OW! MOM, IT HURTS!" I yelled.

My mom and dad ran over to me. I was crying, I was in so much pain. It was worse than when I fell on the ice.

"Riker, I need you to rate the pain on a scale of 1 to 10," my mom said.

"10! IT HURTS!"

"He needs to go to the emergency room," my father said.

"Do you want to take him?"

"Yeah. Come on, Riker. Let's see if you can walk."

My dad put his arms under mine, and gently lifted me to my feet. I was in too much pain to stand.

"Wait. We should have him put on some dry clothes first," my mom said, running up the stairs.

It hurt too much to stand, so my dad had to help me change. He picked me up, and carried me out to the car. He put a pillow down on the seat for me to sit on, and then buckled my seatbelt for me.

I was still crying, and trying to find a more comfortable position while my dad drove.

"Riker, if you could try to stop crying and calm down, that'd be great," my dad said kind of annoyed.

"It hurts, dad!"

"I know. You should've been more careful."

I groaned loudly.

"What?"

"It hurts so bad!" I yelled.

Kayla POV

I hadn't seen any sign of Riker through his bedroom window. I wondered what had happened about his test grade.

I grabbed my phone and texted him.

"How did it go with the test grade?"

Within a minute, I got a response.

"Not so great... Then I slipped and fell, and I'm being taken to the emergency room. It hurts! Save me!"

Oh my gosh...

"Are you serious?"

"Yes, this is the first time in like forever that I've cried, except for when I thought my dad was going to die. I can barely sit in the car. It's too painful!"

"Aw... Feel better!"

Well that's not good...
