Chapter 6
Midnight...
Riker POV
As soon as it was midnight, I stared at my phone. I need to know what happened.
I was sitting straight up in bed, waiting.
My phone buzzed, and I had a text from Kayla.
"Moving in next door next week...:'("
Oh my god... She's going to live with her real parents...
"Are you ok?" I texted back.
"No. I'm freaking out. My hands are shaking. I don't know what to do!"
I jumped out of bed, jammed my feet into my sneakers, even though I didn't have socks on, and slid a hoodie on over my head. I also grabbed my glasses and my phone, and then snuck out the front door. If I get caught, I'm in big trouble...
I jogged down the sidewalk in the icy air. I finally made it to Kayla's house. I climbed up a tree next to her bedroom window, which was hard because I could barely feel my fingers. I knocked on her window. I saw the curtains move, and then I saw Kayla. She was crying as she opened the window.
I crawled in, and shut the window. I hugged her tight, and she cried into my shoulder.
"Kayla, it's going to be ok, I promise. And you'll be next door now. If anything happens, you can tell me, and I'll call the police."
Kayla had her arms wrapped tightly around my neck. She was breathing hard, and I could feel her slightly shaking.
"Come on. Let's sit in your bed, and you can calm down."
We both got in her bed. I pulled the covers over us because it was cold. I was sitting up, but Kayla was laying down. Her head was in my lap, and I had one of my arms draped over her shoulder.
"Kayla, I swear. Everything's going to be ok," I said, softly.
She took my other hand in hers, and held it close to her. I sighed, not knowing how to make her feel better.
Morning...
Kayla POV
I woke up, and realized I was on top of Riker. My head was still in his lap from last night. I gently sat up and looked at him. I shook his shoulder gently.
"Mmmm..."
I shook it a little more.
"Mmmm..."
Riker opened his eyes slowly, and then sat straight up.
"Oh my god, my mom's going to kill me!"
I looked at him, worried. I guess he snuck out last night...
"I have to go. I'll text you!"
Riker gave me a quick hug, and then left through the window.
Alright then...
Riker POV
I ran as fast as I could. Once I got to my house, I got the spare key, and slowly unlocked the door. I opened it quietly, and went in.
"Safe," I whispered.
I walked into the kitchen. When my mom saw me, she put her hands on her hips.
"Riker Anthony, just where do you think you were this morning?"
Not safe...
"Um..."
I couldn't think straight. When she used my middle name, I knew I was in big trouble, and it honestly scared me a little.
