"Be good, I love you." My Dad told me as I gave him a kiss goodbye. He backed out of the driveway and waved, before driving away. His boss was making him attend a conference in Wyoming, and apparently I, his one and only daughter am 'too precious' to be left home alone for a week. Or, he thought i'd throw a party. Either way, I was fine staying with my grandparents they've got a cool house and a very cute neighbor.
I had my overnight bag on one arm so I turned the knob and used my hip to push open their front door. My grandma was quick to come greet me.
"How ya' been sweet pea?"She asked wrapping her arms around me.
I smiled, "good, how about you and gramps?" I asked.
"We sure are better now that you're here." She responded. "Haven't seen you since that super sweet sixteen of yours and you must have grown at least a foot."
"That was only a month ago gram." I laughed.
"Well that's 30 days too many if you ask me, anyhow let's head to the dining room i'm sure your grandfather is getting dinner on the table by now." She grabbed my bag and ran off to the put it in the guest room before we went to eat.
"There's my Bella-bear." My gramps called out as we entered the dining room. He was serving some chicken soup he had made. "She looks like she's grown a foot!" He exclaimed, raising an eyebrow towards my gram. He wrapped one arm around my shoulder and poured the last of the soup into the third bowl. 'It's good to see you doll."
I smiled and gave him a hug.
"That's what I told her, this girl just won't stop growing." My gram responded.
What is it about grandparents always thinking you've grown? If I actually grew as much as they think I do i'd be at least twelve feet tall by now. Sadly I've been stuck at a whopping 5'2" ever since freshman year.
"How about we get eatin'?" my grandpa asked clapping his hands together.
"Sounds good." I smiled and we all sat down at their cute round dining table, and my grandpa said grace.
The dinner was delicious and table talk was your average, kid vs. relative.
"How's school?"
"Schools good."
"Have you got a boyfriend yet?"
"No, I don't have a boyfriend."
"Well those boys sure are missing out."
"Thanks gramps."
After we had been finished eating, and had just been chatting for a while, I heard Snowy's blaring meow and watched through the window as she dashed into my grandmother's garden. Snowy is my grandparent's pet cat. They let her inside but she prefers to roam around outside most of the time. I can't blame her, their property is absolutely gorgeous.
I thanked them for my meal, and excused myself from the table. I ran into the den and quickly laced up my high-tops and threw on a light sweater over my tank-top, though I was still wearing shorts. Summer nights get chilly but they aren't too bad.
The sky was a navy blue, the color it turns just before it gets completely dark, and I could already see a few stars.
I zippered my sweater and headed towards the beautiful garden. The pleasant aroma of flowers filled my nose as I got closer. I finally got to the soft mulch filled ground, and took a peek at all of the beautiful blossoming flowers. I heard another meow, it was as if Snowy was begging me to find him. I followed the noise and saw a blur of white dart from rose bush to rose bush.
"Dumb cat." I shook my head, and smiled.
I began walking towards the last place I saw the fluffy blur.
I got to the bush and lifted up the branches and shouted "Gotcha!" and she darted into my legs causing me to lose my balance, though I didn't fall entirely. I was able to use the huge oak tree behind me to steady myself. Then, she ran off again.
"Whatever Snow." I sighed, giving up on catching her.
There was a faint light shining from behind me, I turned around to see the entire tree was covered with swirling lines connecting and forming patterns that looked almost mandalas. They slightly protruded from the bark and shone a pale white. I was in awe, looking at the tree that has been here as long as I could remember, and held my tree house since I was no more than six years old. I'd never seen anything like it, I traced the intricate patterns with my index finger and a rainbow of color trailed behind it.
"Woah." I whispered to myself.
I took my hand off the tree and all of the lights went out and everything was dark. Upset, I gently placed my palm back on the bark and the tree burst back to life. The light so bright this time it filled the garden making the flowers change colors. The hydrangeas that had grown to cover most of the trees roots parted and formed a path. The only noise to be heard was the rustling of leaves and the quiet sound of wood scraping on wood.
Keeping my hand on the tree I slid to the other side, through the path created by the bushes. My eyes widened as I watched a door within the tree sliding open.
"This must be a dream." I thought to myself. I've become used to lucid dreaming but they never involved other people. Maybe I fell asleep at the dinner table? How embarrassing would that be?
I stuck my head through the opening in the tree and looked down. There was a spiral wooden staircase leading downward, but I could only see a few of the steps.
"To hell with it." I whispered, before taking my first step onto the sturdy wooden structure. When my foot hit the light brown step, it turned a brilliant blue, the next a vibrant yellow, then green, then purple and so on, lighting my way. I continuously looked behind me for the dim light that had been shining down from the opening. Then, just as I hit a fantastic orange step, there was a loud 'boom'. The door through which I had entered had shut.
