Sam got through band without any hitches, and walked over to the cafeteria. Lunch wasn't as good as it used to be. You see, they used to have a bright, full table, with many people. But people change, breakups happen, and now the table was down to five. A quiet table really. Sam usually liked to listen to music or draw. Today she decided the second option was the better way to go.
She sighed contentedly as she sketched out the beginning of a girl. Sam never decided what she was going to draw, she always let her pencil guide her through the tangled woods of sketching. She wasn't very good at it, but she never minded that. As she worked, she allowed the noises in the background to blur together into a comforting white noise. The perfect environment for a good sketch.
However, there was always the voice in the back of her head. Saying she didn't have Rose because she alienated herself from others. Because she just wasn't good enough.
Sam sighed, and snapped her book closed. Once those thoughts wormed her way up, there was no R&R for her.
She pulled out her headphones for the second time that day, thinking about the one highlight of the day where she could see Rose. The one class they had together. Gym.
Admittedly, this was not the ideal class to share with ones crush, but it was kinda adorable how competitive she got when she was playing.
Sam smiled, and absorbed herself in her music. Music was her getaway from the rest of the world. The one place where she could be where she wanted, with who she wanted.
She heard the bell ring, and got up, joining the rest of the heard of students trampling down the hallway. Sam grinned as she imagined the hallway as a jungle paths that a ton of elephants were trampling down. A ton of elephants. Real funny Sam. Real funny. She thought with a mental eye roll at her own stupidity.
She startled as a light hand tapped her shoulder. She melted a little on the inside as she saw a pair of gorgeous brown eyes looking into hers.
"Hey," Rose said with a grin, "penny for your thoughts?"
Sam stumbled through her thoughts to craft a somewhat intelligent sentence to say.
"I was just imagining the hallway as elephants. I.. I mean the elephants as hallways. " pull it together Sam "I was. Imagining the students as elephants going through the jungle" she finished proudly with a grin. Sam then proceeded to burst out laughing at the absolutely queer face Rose was pulling. At this they were both laughing. Rose at Sam's inability to speak English, and Sam at Rose's strange facial expressions when trying not to burst into hysterics. They settled down, then realized that the bell was ringing in two minutes. They both scrambled to their lockers in an attempt to reach their respective classrooms on time.
Sam whipped into the workshop in the nick of time, and got our her project to finish up.
It was dull work really, not the most interesting. Sam had already carved her piece, and was now looking through the cabinet full of wood stain. Half of them were dried up, as the kids had been left ajar, but she managed to scrounge together an appropriate amount of stains to work with.
She worked dutifully through the class period, staying on task most of the time. Bent on getting this project done.
Sam packed up her things when the bell rang, and put her piece on the stand so it would dry properly. One coat down, three more to go. She thought. Getting exasperated at the very thought. This was a project that required a great attention to detail.
She walked into the gym lockers, and changed into her gym clothes. She walked into the gymnasium, and looked round.
So we're finally getting onto our tennis matches are we? She thought, a sly grin creeping across her face. She was good, yes, but with Rose as a partner, they would be undefeated. Of course that isn't the onl- her thoughts were cut off by a sharp whistle being blown. Gym had begun.
