An Awkward Start To The Day

Sam arrived at school with a grunted goodbye which she was sure no one heard. She looked at her phone and swore. "Shit. I'm going to be late" she raced across the yard, her backpack thumping on her shoulder blades. It wasn't that she was too concerned about missing the bell, more of missing her smile. At this, Sam grinned, and slowed her pace, nearing the front door. She walked briskly down the hallway, making her way to her locker, ignoring the chatter, laughter, and looks that always seems to point directly at you. She set down her belongings in the crowded row of people, and got out her binder for maths. She had just gotten her bag crammed into her locker, when she heard the delightful sound of Rose's voice. Sam spun around quickly, nearly tripping herself in the process. She tried to disguise her blush with a smile put a neon sign on your face would you Sam? Hm? Let's make it obvious to her, and buy a billboard to advertise it next! She thought to herself sarcastically. She was, after all, a very sarcastic person.
Sam managed to muster a quick, "Hi Rose, have fun in math!" Before scurrying down the hallway.
Stupid stupid stupid. Could you have acted more stupid???? Dear lord Sam, get it together.
She was too busy mentally shunning herself to notice the oncoming door attack, so it came as quite a surprise when she looked up from her rantings to a face full of door. She let out a very unattractive grunt before walking into the class room.
She sat down at her seat after sitting down before bracing herself for the unbearable torture that was abstract algebra. The bell rang, and the horror began.
After a seemingly never ending lesson on parabolas, Sam trudged out of the classroom.  She usually went to her locker to talk to a handful of people, and attempt to strike up a conversation with Rose on the absolute dullness of math.
"Hey Rose, how was math?" She asked, a joking tone in her voice.
"Oh it was wonderful!" Rose responded with equal amounts of sass and sarcasm.
The conversation continued, and ended, as all conversations do. Sam couldn't help but let out a sigh as she walked to her next class. Rose would never be hers.  As she walked, Tori caught up with her.
Tori was somewhat of an attention snagger, she was beautiful, no doubt about it, but Sam had known her far too long so see her in that way.
As Tori muddled on and on about who did what with who and so on, Sam couldn't help but let her mind wander. She was deep in thought about Rose's lips, when she ran into the door. Again. Jesus I really have to get my head out of the clouds Sam thought, as she rubbed her forehead. Tori laughed "Come on Sammy" she taunted.
Sam chased after her to their seats. Tori had been with Sam long enough to know that nothing would happen except for the occasional punch or five when she was called Sammy.
Before class started, Sam stuck up a small conversation with Emily. Emily was a bubbly girl. Not in the figure sense, but very much so in the personality type.  They had a small conversation, before muddling through science.
