Present day
The sky was clear and the sun shone brightly overhead. Lian drove slowly towards the farming village where she would be staying for the next couple of days for Tania's wedding. The warm June air breezed through her car window as she winded her way down the deserted road. Tania's parents lived on a farm in the sleepy northern village of County Durham. She had been to this farm several times during her ten-year friendship with Tania.
Finally, Tania and Lucas were getting married after eight years of being together. All through undergraduate school and medical school and their internship. Tania and Lucas had been inseparable. Both Lucas and Tania were in their final year of residency at the hospital and were both looking to set roots. The two had finally decided to take the plunge into the marital world.
Tania drove up to the house to find Tania waiting for her outside. She had not seen her best friend in three months since her move to her company's New York office. She was now a senior publishing editor, and based in New York, she had loved the change of scene. The New York circuit was so much busier than her sedate London life.
Her parents had hated the fact that she was so far away. Her parents had both been University lecturers in Economics. They had married in their late thirties and had her a few years later. She was their 'miracle baby'.Now retired they had taken the initial journey with her and loved the New York scene so that they had decided to take a tour of the US. They were now in Seattle Washington and would be flying in for the wedding in a few days.
She opened the car door and Tania rushed over to give her a huge hug. They stood like that for minutes just jumping around.
'I am so glad you're here!' Tania shouted doing her happy jig on the gravel road.
'I would not miss this for the world.' Lian responded as the two friends released each other.
They went to collect her suitcase from the trunk actually suitcases. She had three.
'So how is the wedding planning going? Is your mom still driving you crazy?' Tania's mother was excited that her only daughter was finally getting married so she was pulling out all the stops. She wanted a lavish village wedding and had invited all the town people. Although the wedding was a week away, the house seemed to be alive with activity.
'Lian so glad to see you.' Tania's mother Mrs Croft said coming over to give her a hug. She was a petite woman who had the grandmother aura down to the last bobby pin in her hair.
'Thank you for having me in your home.' Lian stated to the lovely woman.
'It is always great to see you Lian although I would be happy to organise your big day as well?' Mrs Croft looked at her with a twinkle in her eye.
'I will keep that in mind.' Lian responded as they moved toward the living area.
'Lian is here Harry.' Mrs Croft called out to her husband who was reading a newspaper on the armchair.
Lian went over to the older man who was quite tall and intimidating but he was a softie inside. 'Good day Mr Croft.'
'Come over here girl.' He gave her a huge hug as well.
'Sit and tell me all about those people across the pond.' Lian sat down on the sofa. She crossed her denim clad legs and contemplated removing her short brown leather jacket. She adjusted her beige top instead since the weather was warm on this summer day.
'New York is busy 24/7. There is always a show or an event in the city. Although it is quite fast paced, I am enjoying it immensely.' Lian said as Tania came into the room.
