Chapter 7: Promise

Girlfriend. That word shocked and angered Riley as soon as it came out of Maya's mouth. It stung. Especially after she kissed Maya. She had her... She thought she had her. Only to find out she was someone else's.

The fact that it hurt Riley so much surprised even Riley herself. No girl had so much control over her. Except Maya.

"Nice to meet you." Riley said to Ashley with a fake smile, as if nothing was wrong.

"I think I should go." Riley said. The hurt and sadness so clear in her voice.

"Riley wait!" Maya said as she walked to the red haired girl.

"I'll be right back Ashley." Maya said and ran to catch up with Riley.

"You know what Maya? It's fine. Go be happy." Riley said, tears threatening to fall any second.

"Look, I was going to tell you, but-"

"But what Maya?? But you just wanted to lead me on and then break my heart?" Tears were now streaming down Riley's face.

"No! Ok, come here a sec." Maya said and pulled Riley to the janitor's closet.

"Riley, I know what it looks like but it's not what you think. I really really like you. I was just afraid to break up with Ashley because..." Maya stopped for a moment. "I can't tell you why. But please trust me when I say I want you. I want to be with you, and hold your hand and call you mine. But because of Ashley.."

"So break up with her. If you really want me, break up with her." Riley said, her voice cracking.

"Riley it's not that simple. There are things about Ashley that I can't tell you. And those things are also the reason I can't break up with her." Maya said looking in Riley's eyes.

"So what? We're just gonna pretend like everything that happened between us never happened? We're just gonna throw it all away?" Riley said as new tears began to fall down her cheeks.

"No! Not at all! I just wish we can be together and I wouldn't have to hurt Ashley. Maybe we can! We can be together without her knowing until everything works out."

"Maya, I want something real with you." Riley spoke softly.

"Me too Riles, and it will be. It's just temporary. Like I said, I can't tell you why but can you just trust me? Just this one time.. Please.." Maya said as she started to cry as well.

Riley hesitated before answering.

"Yes."

"Yes?" Maya said as she started to grin.

"Yes." Riley said and smiled softly.

"But promise me something." Riley said.

"Anything."

"Promise me, that no matter what happens, we're in this together."

"I promise." Maya said and grabbed Riley's face pulling her into a passionate kiss.

"I will break up with her as soon as I can." Maya said, her eyes still closed, and her mouth still close to Riley's.

Riley nodded and kissed Maya again. Every time they kissed it felt like fireworks.
