I pulled my sleeping bag over my head, groaning out as Jasper groaned again. He has been in pain all night, moaning and groaning, keeping everyone awake. As much as I love him, I need sleep. If I don't find sleep who knows what will happen.
The floor of the drop ship doesn't make for a very comfortable bed. I haven't fallen asleep at all because between the rough metal floor and Jasper this was becoming a living hell.
"Tatum." Someone says as I feel a hand reach under my arm, trying to wake me.
"Go away." I say sinking farther into my sleeping bag.
"Tatum! Come with me." Bellamy says as I finally open my eyes. "You won't get any sleep on this floor. Come with me."
I nod, too exhausted to do anything else, and follow him out of the drop ship. He leads me to a beige tent, visibly bigger than the others, right in the middle of all of the rest of the tents. He looks back at me, probably checking to make sure I was still there and lifts the cover of the tent up, revealing a very cozy looking bed.
"Go." Bellamy says nodding towards the bed. "Sleep."
I nod and walk into his tent without hesitation. I don't know where all this trust with Bellamy has come from, but it was slightly scaring me. I lifted the covers of the bed and slipped in, the warmth enclosing my body as I melted down onto the bed. Sleep found me almost instantly.
***
To my amazement I slept for almost six hours, not waking once. Jasper still groans as I pull the covers off of me and put my combat boots back on.
I walk out of Bellamy's tent, a few people's heads turn, probably getting the wrong idea. I see Bellamy and Murphy standing over by the trees with some nice looking knives and I decide to join them.
Murphy launches a knife towards the tree, attempting to make it stick. The knife hits the tree and clatters to the ground.
"That damn kid, always messing with my head." Murphy mumbles walking forwards to retrieve his knife off the ground.
"He's not gonna last much longer. Better think of a new excuse." Bellamy comments.
I walk over to them and stand next to Bellamy.
"Can I try?" I ask.
Murphy lets out a loud laugh but Bellamy eyes me before handing me a knife.
I turn it in my hand at a 90 degree angle, grasping the blade, before throwing it straight for the tree. The blade catches the bark perfectly and sticks its landing.
"Now, that's how it's done." Bellamy says looking over at me looking impressed.
Murphy glares at me and is about to say something but Atom walks up, interrupting him.
"We searched a half-mile all directions. No sign of Trina or Pascal." Atom says.
"Trina and Pascal went missing?" I ask.
"You slept for a while." Bellamy smiles.
"Could be Grounders." I suggest.
"Yeah, or they could be in pound town. Lot of that going around recently." Murphy says.
As if on queue, Jasper moans loudly from the drop ship, making Murphy growl loudly.
"Look, Bellamy, people are scared, and that dying kid, he's not helping the morale around here." Atom says.
"You're not suggesting we kill him, are you?!" I practically yell, stepping in between him and Bellamy.
"Shh. Keep your voice down!" Atom says back. "All I'm saying is that he's not helping."
Bellamy looks at me then back at Atom, "Morale will go up when I find them more food."
"And what do we say when they ask us about Trina and Pascal?" Atom asks.
"Now? Nothing. It's impossible, they're just lost. We'll keep an eye out for them when we go hunting later." Bellamy answers.
I walk away, uninterested in the conversation anymore and more interested in making sure my friend is okay. I walk into the drop ship and climb the ladder to the second floor.
"This is infected." Clarke says examining Jasper's wound. "He could be septic. Any progress on using the wristbands to contact the Ark? Monty?"
I look over and see Monty crouched in the corner with a lot of glowing and bright electronic objects. "That would be a firm no." Monty answers.
"How's he doing?" I ask walking over to Clarke.
"I don't know. Without the contact to the Ark, I honestly don't know what else to do." Clarke says, seeming frustrated.
"Clarke, I don't want to suggest this, but it may save his life." I say crouching down next to Jasper. "Remember when I got that huge cut in Biology a couple of years ago and it got infected because I didn't tell anyone about it? When I went to see your mother she had to cut away all the infected skin. It was extremely painful, but it saved my leg."
"You're right!" Clarke says, lighting up a bit. "How could I not think about that?"
"Okay, Wells, Finn, Tatum, hold Jasper down." Clarke demands.
I grab Jasper's right shoulder and press it down.
Clarke takes out her knife and grabs a piece of skin from around Jasper's wound. She begins sawing it off. Jasper's moans turns to loud screams as he tries to jerk up.
"Hold him still! I need to cut away the infected flesh." Clarke yells.
Octavia and Bellamy come running up the ladder.
"Stop it! You're killing him!" Octavia yells.
"She's trying to save his life!" I yell back.
"She can't." Bellamy says, walking up behind Octavia.
"We didn't drag him through miles of woods just to let him die." I say, pressing Jasper's shoulder further towards the drop ship's floor.
"He's a goner. If you can't see that, you're deluded. He's making people crazy." Bellamy says.
I couldn't help but feel the sting of his words run through my body.
"Sorry if Jasper's an inconvenience to you. This isn't the Ark, down here we don't leave anyone behind." I say, yelling my words straight at Bellamy.
"Look at him. He's a lost cause." Bellamy says.
"Listen to me! I've spent my whole life watching my mother heal people. If I say there's hope, there's hope." Clarke says.
"This isn't about hope, it's about guts. You don't have the guts to make the hard choices. I do. He's been like this for three days. If he's not better by tomorrow, I'll kill him myself." Bellamy says turning to leave and climb back down the ladder.
"Octavia! Take my place." I say my fury getting the best of me as I climb down the ladder after Bellamy.
I run out of the drop ship door after Bellamy. He turns, walking towards his tent and I follow.
"Who the hell do you think you are?!" I yell after him, making him stop in his tracks. "Who the actual hell put you in charge here, huh? Because last time I checked, we don't have any rules down here."
Bellamy stands, stunned at my words.
"You will not kill Jasper tomorrow. Do you hear me? You'll have to go through me, and, honey, I don't go down without a fight." I say getting in his face.
Before I could even prosper what was happening, I was kissing him back. Bellamy had grabbed my face with both of his hands and smashed my lips to his. His rough lips were suddenly gentle with mine, them moving in perfect simultaneity.
I pulled back, looking at his face in shock. Bellamy didn't say anything. He just turned his back and walked away, towards the camp fire.
