I watch as Bellamy and four other people drop Wells' body into the grave. I sat by a tree, a little ways away. I pull my knees to my chest and rest my head on my knee caps. Bellamy hasn't seen me yet, and I plan on keeping it that way. I want him to feel the disappoint I felt when he told me the kiss meant nothing. He kissed me when I killed Atom, and it was different. It was full of love and compassion, something I have yet to admit I have for him.
Bellamy and the guys began shoveling dirt into the grave, angrily. I can see why he is angry. This just means more stress and chaos within the camp. I guess we could just tell everyone it was the Grounders, but we all know it wasn't.
"Hey." Octavia says, walking around the tree and plopping right down next to me.
"Hey, O." I mumble lifting my head only slightly when she sat down.
"Who do you think did it?" Octavia asks after a while of silence.
"I have no idea. I overhead Bellamy telling some of the guys to tell the camp it was the Grounders." I answer.
"It wasn't the Grounders." Octavia says.
"How do you know that?" I ask.
"Because," Octavia pulls out a knife from her boot. "Jasper and I found this by Wells' fingers. It's Murphy's knife."
Shock hit me like a bullet train. It was Murphy's knife. But it wasn't at the same time. It's the knife I gave Charlotte the night we went hunting.
"Listen to me, O, it wasn't Murphy." I say slowly rising from my spot on the ground, a little creeped out.
"Yes it was, Tatum, the proof is all here." Octavia says. "And I'm gonna tell Bellamy." She says as she stands up next to me.
"No, listen to me." I say moving over to her and grabbing both of her shoulders. "Don't say anything to Bellamy. Let me handle this...trust me."
She nods, but I can see the disbelief in her eyes. I know she'll say something to Bellamy, that's why I have to act fast.
I run off back behind camp walls in search of Charlotte. She's got to be around here somewhere. I run towards the tents and open the flap to hers...empty. I walk into the drop ship and find all three floors empty. I walk over to the meat hut and only find a few people working in there...no Charlotte. Where the hell is the little delinquent?!
As I exit the meat house I see a commotion going on towards the camp fire. Bellamy and Clarke are going at it.
"Fear of the Grounders is building that wall. And besides, what are you gonna do... just walk out there and ask the killer to step forward? You don't even know whose knife that is." Bellamy yells, getting in Clarke's face.
"Oh, really?" Clarke holds up the knife that Octavia found, turning it over and pointing at the end of it. "J.M. John Murphy. The people have a right to know."
Crap! I run at full speed over to them.
Clarke walks over to Murphy, "You son of a bitch!" Clarke shoves Murphy backwards.
"What's your problem?" Murphy yells.
"Recognize this?" Clarke yells, showing Murphy the knife.
"It's my knife. Where'd you find it?" Murphy asks, completely oblivious to what is going on.
"Where you dropped it after you killed Wells." Clarke yells.
"Where I what?" Murphy sounds completely shocked. "I didn't kill Wells, the Grounders did."
I decide to try to put a stop to this.
"Clarke!" I yell, pushing through the crowd. "Murphy didn't kill Wells."
"Yes he did!" Clarke yells back, getting in my face. She then turns to Murphy. "I know what you did, and you're going to pay for it."
"Bellamy, listen to me." I say, talking and looking at him for the first time in over a day. "Murphy didn't do this."
Bellamy looks a me, something flashing through his eyes. He wants to believe me, I know it. But the proof is there. And since I couldn't find Charlotte in time there's no proof Murphy didn't do it.
"You threatened to kill him. We all heard you. You hated Wells." Clarke continues towards Murphy.
"Plenty of people hated Wells. His father was the Chancellor that locked us up." Murphy fires back.
"Yeah, but you're the only one who got in a knife fight with him." Clarke points out.
"Yeah, I didn't kill him then, either." Murphy says.
"Tried to kill Jasper too." Octavia pipes up.
"Bellamy, look, I'm telling you man. I didn't do this." Murphy says walking over to Bellamy and I.
"He's telling the truth, Bell. He didn't do it." I say, trying to defend Murphy.
"They found his fingers on the ground with your knife." Bellamy says.
"I say we float him." Octavia says.
"Bellamy, look at me." I say turning Bellamy's shoulders towards me. "Do I look like I'm lying? I know for a fact he didn't do it."
"How do you know that?" Bellamy asks, the crowd going quiet as they listen in on us.
"Because he never had that knife the night Wells died." I say.
"Then who did?" Clarke asks.
"He gave the knife to me." I say.
"What?" Bellamy asks.
"But then-" I start to explain how I had given it to Charlotte and Charlotte killed Wells but I got interrupted.
"It was you." Clarke says. "You killed Wells."
"No!-" I start but am interrupting again.
"I say we kill her." Myles says.
"No! Listen to me!" I yell.
"Why should we listen to you when you're the one with blood on your hands?" Myles asks.
Before I could answer Myles had taken me to the ground, punching me repeatedly. I try to grab his shoulders and pull him off of me but he was too strong.
"Stop it! Get off of her!" I hear Bellamy yell, but no one listens.
Multiple people join in on beating me to a pulp. Finally, Bellamy throws the guys off of me.
"I said get off of her!" Bellamy yells.
"Bellamy..please." I beg, blood running down my face. "I didn't do it, it was-"
"Shut the hell up!" Myles yells grabbing me by the neck and dragging me backwards.
"Float her! Float her! Float her!" The crowd begins chanting.
The guys tie a piece of fabric from one of the seat belts around my mouth, enabling me to speak. I scream loudly as they continue to drag me through the mud towards a huge looking tree.
"I say we float both of them." Myles grins loudly, shoving Murphy down on the ground as well.
I look over at Murphy, terror in both of our eyes, as I see someone throw a rope over the tree limb.
Where the hell is Charlotte?!
