"Elle, the nurse said that-" my mother started to speak but paused mid-sentence when she noticed Bryson. Arching an eyebrow, Mom closed the door and walked farther into the hospital room. "Who are you?" She asked defensively as she also crossed her arms over her chest.
Rolling my brown eyes, I smiled because the look on my mom's face was priceless as she glared holes in Bryson. I swear, just from the look in her eyes, she was seconds from killing Bryson. "Mother, this is Bryson Wyatt." I told her. Looking at her facial features, I judged that she was beyond curious as to why he was here. "He is my boyfriend," I informed her as I figured that if she didn't know I was dating him before the accident that now was not a good time to spring the news that we are engaged.
Mother's eye drifted from Bryson onto me. A look of pure shock found her face as she studied me for a second longer than normal. "El-Elle, is your memory back?" She inquired with happiness straining through her voice.
My eyes casted down on the white blankets that laid on top of me. "No, Ma."
"Then-" she began to say, but Bryson stood up.
"Hello, I don't think we have formally met. My name is Bryson Wyatt," he stated with the sweetest, most polite, smile anyone could ever muster. Giving an outreached arm, he offered to shake my mother's hand.
Ma was stiff for a second and at first I didn't think she would shake his hand. Yet, soon she grudgingly shook his hand. Her brown eyes drifted to me as she and Bryson let go of hands.
I gave her a look that basically meant 'be nice'.
Mother sighed rather loudly, before turning her attention back to Bryson. "Nice to meet you too ... so, you were dating my daughter before the accident?" She questioned.
I could tell just from the way that Ma was acting that she wasn't quite sure if he was telling the truth or not. However, I just couldn't help but think he was telling the truth. There was just something so --- familiar about him. I was downright certain that we were dating. However, I really wish I could remember why I was keeping our relationship a secret.
"Yes Ma'am," he replied in a soft tone. Looking at me, Bryson gave a wide grin as his eyes twinkled with an emotion I couldn't quite put my hand on...
"Well ... Ummm," Mother was obviously baffled and unsure what to say next to neither Bryson nor I.
However, I knew soon she would ask him to leave. So, before she could protest his presence, I spoke up. "What did the nurse say? Can I go see Peter?" I quizzed with hopefulness seeping in my voice.
Looking over at me, Ma sighed. "You can see him. Your nurse, Jenna, is going to be in here in a few. She's gone to fetch you a wheelchair."
I gnawed at my bottom lip for I felt, once again, sheltered. "Mom, I have two legs. I can walk," I proclaimed. Shoving the covers off me, I smiled for I was finally going to be able to leave this room. I swung my legs over so they hung off the left side of my bed. My body gave a few cracks as some of my joints started to move for the first time in days. With my eyes looking down at the floor, I slowly slid off the bed. The second my feet touched the ground my legs gave out and my hands slipped off the bed where I had a loose grip on the sheets.
"Elle!" Mother shouted as I started to fall to the ground.
My butt was mere inches from connecting with the white tile floor, but something caught me under my arms. Glancing down I saw that the object that caught me under my arms was a pair of hands --- Bryson's hands.
Bryson pulled me up to my feet, but my feet were barely touching the ground because he was holding me up. I watched as he effortlessly placed me back on the bed.
