"Adam, you know I can walk home by myself" I spoke as he locked the apartment door where his sister was. He turned to face, me, pausing for a moment. He shook his head, he was slightly drunk and tired. We walked out into the city, and I pressed a cigarette between my lips, he watched me for a moment, taking out a lighter from his pocket and flicking it right on my cigarette. We maintained eye contact as i lit it. He gave me a small smile, and I wondered why he had the lighter, but I didn't ask.
We walked silently through the lit streets, it was late, and quiet and it was just me and Adam in the crisp, Pittsburgh air. We stumbled a little bit together but we walked slowly, both of us enjoying the walk, the wind was picking up though and I could smell the rain coming. There was a storm.
I looked over at Adam, he seemed to realize the shift in the weather, but he looked... Paranoid, his eyes widened, he fiddled with his hands and he looked around all over. The soft rolling thunder was coming in he stopped and looked up at the sky the dark menacing clouds falling over the beautiful sunrise. But thunderstorms were my favoritie and I was very calm. Turned around, feeling the wind begin to pick up and blow my hair.
"Adam?" I asked softly, walking up to him and resting my hand gently on his arm, he shook. He didn't look like the type to be afraid of thunderstorms... Something else was on his mind. "Adam!" I called again, but he was unresponsive. He looked around, but flinched as the heavy, cold raindrops fell from the sky wetting everything around us. It started slow, but came down very heavily. Our hair became matted to our faces. I didn't mind getting wet, the rain made me feel new, but Adams eyes watered, and he stared at the cars that were oncoming, whispering something I couldn't hear. "ADAM!" I yelled louder, the rain drowning out my voice. His head snapped to me, his brown eyes masking something.
"Are you... Are you hurt?" He asked me. My eyebrows furrowed.
"What??"
"ARE YOU HURT" he yelled, grabbing my face.
"Adam, I'm fine, I spoke, holding his wrists as they touched my face. He was down right terrified, and I knew in that moment it was a lot more than just the thunder.
"Oh god" he cried, turning away from me and looking at his hands. "Oh god, oh god" his hands shook vigorously as he stared at them like he had just murdered someone. I stared at him as the rain soaked us. "Alex..." He mumbled and looked around "no NO NO NO"
"Adam" I put my hands on his face, "hey, calm down, it's me" he looked at me, his eyes wide and afraid. I linked my arm into his and began walking to my apartment, he shook as the thunder rolled over our heads and the Lightning danced into the sky. He pulled his hood up, even though the rain already soaked him. Every time a car whizzed passed he would jolt, look away and grip onto me tighter.
"Don't stand so close to the road" he spoke, pulling me onto the far side of the sidewalk. He looked up into the sky again, looking right back down when the thunder rolled again.
We made it into the building where it was suddenly very cold, we both shivered as we made it to the elevator. "I uh, guess I should head back now" he nodded to me, turning around. I grabbed his arm."Let me give you some dry clothes, at least" he stared at me for a moment, but then nodded and we walked into the elevator, making it up to the ninth floor and walking out. He looked around, examining the new place as I walked swiftly with him to apartment 903. I fumbled with my keys as I shivered, the rain was getting to me now.
Salem, my beautiful black cat greeted me as we drunkenly stumbled into the apartment. Adam took off his shoes, and then his wet socks annd placed them in his shoes. Salem didn't care much that he was wet and began rubbing up against him. Adam smiled gently and kneeled down letting Salem lick his fingers.
