I’m not the type of girl who spends a lot of time on her appearance.

I mean, yes, I will usually put on concealer and mascara, and sometimes I attempt to curl my hair, but that’s usually as much as I will do. However, tonight, while I had been getting ready for the haunted hayride with the team, I’d actually put in a great deal of effort. I’d straightened my hair, picked out my clothes carefully, and done a full face makeup. It’s amazing how much goes into trying to look like you haven’t put on any makeup.

However, my efforts hadn’t gone unnoticed. When I’d walked over to Dane’s house a couple minutes to seven, Tony was there, and he’d commented on how I cleaned up well for a hockey player. Dane hadn’t said a word, but his eyes kind of widened when he looked at me for the first time that night, which made me feel good and a little awkward at the same time.

“I don’t understand why I can’t pick the music!” Tony whined, ripping me from my thoughts and bringing me back to the car. I was sitting in the back seat, with Tony in the passenger seat and Dane was driving. Apparently, Dane wouldn’t let Tony anywhere near the radio dials, which made Tony exceptionally grumpy.

“I’m sorry that I don’t want to listen to Nicki Minaj or Drake,” Dane replied unapologetically. Then, just to emphasize his point, Dane turned up the volume on the radio, which was set to a rock station currently playing Queen’s Fat Bottomed Girls.

“Maybe Kelsey does,” Tony said and he turned to look at me while Dane glanced at me using the rearview mirror. I resisted the urge to blush, and instead, I crossed my arms over my chest and tilted me head to the side.

“I actually prefer Queen,” I stated truthfully, and Tony threw his hands up in the air and swore. I laughed and ran a hand through my hair, and I caught sight of Dane grinning at me in the rearview mirror. I mentally threatened myself to keep from blushing, and instead, I looked out the window.

That’s when I saw the gigantic and creepy clown head resting on top of a semi-tall farm silo.

“What the hell is that?” I whispered, leaning towards the window and peering out at it.

“That, my dear Kelsey, is the sign that we’ve reached our destination,” Dane stated, and sure enough, as we got closer to the farm, I caught sight of a bunch of surprisingly terrifying Halloween decorations. I also saw a lot of people, a large barn, and an extensive corn field. Instead of getting nervous, though, I just got more excited.

Dane turned into the parking lot, and after parking all the way in the back of the almost filled parking lot, he, Tony, and I all climbed out of the car. The dry, flattened grass and dead leaves crackled underneath our feet as we made our way through the parking lot to the barn where all the people were.

Before I could ask where the rest of the team was, somebody called Dane’s name. He, Tony, and I all turned to that direction, and we saw Alec and most of the rest of the team huddled a few feet from the port-a-johns. They hurried towards us, and within seconds, I was surrounded by Ice Devils.

“Here are your tickets,” Alec said, and he handed them to Tony and Dane. Then, he turned to me and said, “Sorry, Kels. We preordered the tickets a while back to get the team rate, and that was before you joined the Ice Devils.” Alec really did look sorry, and since I’d gotten my jacket, he’d been pretty nice and accepting towards me.
