“Owen, behind the net!”
I pointed towards the opposing center who was waiting for a pass just at the back of the net, and Owen, who was the other defenseman on the ice, took off to cover him. It was just in time, too, since the wing at the top of the right circle sent a pass towards the center.
Owen did a solid job of tying up the center, and the puck rode the boards up to the point, where the other team’s left defenseman was waiting. He caught the puck, but instead of passing it to the other point, he stick-handled it. I noticed one of the other team’s forwards taking position out of the corner of my eye, maybe to catch a pass or tip the puck in, and I moved.
I forced myself between the player and the net, much to his annoyance, and I twisted my stick in his. “Point!” I yelled, drawing the rest of my team’s attention to the shot. The player I was covering kept moving and trying to get in front of me, but I kept on him. There were swear words exchanged, most coming from him, and I just gritted my teeth and stayed strong on my skates.
The defenseman at the point lifted up his stick in a wind-up, and then he let the puck loose in a slapshot. Tony, being the amazing goalie that he was, easily knocked the puck out of the air with his blocker, and he immediately went down to cover it with his glove.
I placed myself between not only the player I was covering and the net, but also between the rest of the players crashing the net. Owen quickly joined me so that we formed a sort of wall together. The referees blew their whistles, but that didn’t stop the other team’s players from pushing me to try and take a dig at Tony.
The center of the team came chest to chest with me, and he looked me up and down before blowing a kiss at me. Inside, I was seething, and I could feel my arm muscles tighten as I resisted the urge to deck him. Instead, I did the complete opposite of a hit; I winked at him.
“Break it up, guys!” one of the referees called as he separated the other team from me. As they skated away slowly to their bench to change lines, I turned to Tony.
“Thanks, Kels,” He said as he pushed up his helmet and took a swig from his water bottle.
“No problem,” I replied with a shrug, and I glanced up at the clock.
Apparently, time had passed quickly, and there was less than a minute left in the game. I looked to the bench and saw that the forwards were changing, but when Owen and I started towards the bench to change as well, Coach Hannover shook his head and told us to stay on. I frowned but nodded, and Owen and I skated back to the circle.
This was the second game that I’d had since Penny had told me that she thought her dad was starting to like me. Friday’s game seemed to support that theory, since he’d played me a lot more than the first game, again with Owen as my defense partner. Still, I hadn’t gotten as much time as the other players, but I’d gotten a more than before. Today, I’d gotten the same time if not more, and Coach Hannover was letting me finish up the game.
I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t excited.
I set myself at the edge of the circle for the faceoff, and I bent over in a ready position. Dane was taking the faceoff, with Alec and a guy named Hank as his wings. They were the strongest line on the team, which was a boost to my confidence. Coach Hannover wasn’t going to put a strong line with a defensive pair he deemed weak.
