"So, I have something to tell you, but you have to promise not to scream."
"See, when you open with that," Penny replied, putting down her fork, which was loaded with macaroni and cheese, "I can't make any promises." I hesitated, since I didn't really need a scene, and Penny laughed. "Jeez, Kels, I was kidding."
"Sorry," I said, the corners of my lips twitching up into a tight smile, "I just don't really need this announced to the entire cafeteria."
"Ooh, this is serious," Penny breathed, and she leaned across the table at me. "Spill your beans, Kelsey!"
I paused for a moment. Dane was my captain, and going on a date with him could possibly mess up the chemistry of the team. However, I had thought about it over the weekend, and I was thinking that maybe, if we didn't tell the team, Dane and I could make it work. If I told Penny, and word spread, obviously, we couldn't keep our relationship, whatever it might be, a secret.
However, I trusted Penny. It was safe to say that Penny was my best friend, and I was sure that she would keep my secret. The only way word would spread is if someone overheard us, and frankly, everyone was too wrapped up in their own conversations to pay ours any mind.
"Alright," I said slowly, and I folded my hands on the table, "So, last Friday at the haunted hayride, Dane-"
"Oh my God, Kelsey!"
I frowned and turned around to see that it was Britney who had interrupted me. She had a huge grin on her face, and she was walking as quickly as she could without looking too excited. Britney's two usual companions followed quickly behind, and they looked more bored than anything.
Since the encounter we'd had on the bleachers, Britney treated Penny and me as friends, despite her reputation as the class bitch. Once and awhile, she would seek me out during the school day to compliment me on something I did in a game, since she came to almost every single one, or just to ask what it was like in a locker room full of half naked boys.
I didn't say much because I didn't want to dash her fantasy by telling her it was an incredibly smelly, vulgar experience. I'll admit, I participated in some of the more racy jokes, but that's because I'd grown up with my dad and brother. I could be just one of the guys.
"Hi Britney," I greeted as she plopped down in the open chair next to me.
"Kelsey, is it true?" Britney gushed, flicking her hair over her shoulder.
"Is what true?" I asked, putting my elbow up on the table and leaning against it.
"Don't play coy with me, Bitch," Britney replied lovingly, "Did you, or did you not, break that Julian kid's nose? You know, the captain of the Kings?"
"Oh, that," I drawled, and I shrugged dismissively, "Yeah, I did. He deserved it, though."
"Oh, I heard," Britney said, wiggling her eyebrows at me, "I heard how they, like, totally kidnapped you, and then you beat every single one of them up!"
"See, now that's not true," I replied, shaking my head, "I kicked one in the dick, bit another, and broke Julian's nose." I wasn't someone who liked larger than life rumors about myself being passed around.
"Same thing," Britney scoffed, "You, Kelsey, are a badass."
"Thanks Britney," I said with a grin, and Britney winked before standing up.
