Tyler really hated some of the things his parents did sometimes.
Tyler had a three-day weekend, and both his parents did too, so the two decided to take a little vacation. Of course, they couldn't bother to bring him, so Tyler had to stay somewhere. Of course his parents didn't trust him to stay home alone. Who would?
The kid didn't have too many friends to call and ask to stay over, and the few he did weren't able to have him over that long. His mom, saving the day, called a family friend. And they accepted.
Tyler didn't know them that well, but was acquainted enough with them to trust them enough. It was a family of six; there were two parents, two sons, and two daughters. One of the sons, Josh, was Tyler's age. They were practically forced to play together as a kid, but they enjoyed it at the time. As they got older, they grew more awkward and drifted apart. Tyler's family was busy as well, so their mothers couldn't plan anything together so often. Tyler still felt a sense of security, though, since he knew them for so long. It might be awkward, but at least he'd be okay.
He held onto that last thought dearly as he got out of his mom's car and dragged his feet slowly towards the door, backpack gripped firmly behind him.
-
"So, uh, where should I put my stuff?" I asked, eager to put my backpack down.
"Well," Josh said, "We don't have a guest room, so you can either stay in my room or sleep on the couch."
I thought about it for a second. Couches seemed nice to sleep on, but I'd always regret it in the morning. On the other hand, if i slept in Josh's bed with him, I might do something weird in my sleep like try and cuddle him- or worse. I was known to be weird in my sleep.
I'd be especially prone to doing something especially since I've forgotten how good Josh looked.
Taking that into consideration, I told him I'd sleep on the couch. I set my bag on the floor against it and Josh motioned for me to come to his room. I let my mind wander further as we made our way across the house.
As a kid, I noticed his amazing features and looked up to them, telling myself that I wanted to look that good when I grow up, and not thinking past that. Later through my years, I realized I'm not straight. I'm not gay, either; I've had actual crushes on girls without a doubt. Something was always nagging me in the back of the head, though, that girls shouldn't be my only restriction.
I did a bit of research on sexuality and to this day I'm still overwhelmed by the possibilities of what I could be. So, I gave up on finding a label for myself. I'll crush on who I end up crushing on and I'll love who I love. If I do end up finding a label that I'm sure fits me, then so be it, but I'm not rushing anything. It's a lot less stressful.
I was snapped back to reality as I found myself in Josh's room, Josh on his bed and patting the spot next to him. I sat down and looked at him.
"So, Ty, what do you wanna do?" Josh asked, using my old nickname. It sounded cute still coming from him. "We have Mario Kart, a couple other games, some movies, or we could walk into town."
"Mario Kart sounds cool," I responded, "and if we get bored we'll decide what to do from there."
I started to help Josh set up the game cube, knowing where all the cords and controllers were stored. Josh's room was completely different since I'd been here years ago, but the entertainment center seemed to be untouched.
For a few hours we played Mario Kart and Smash Bros. Melee. After getting bored of always getting first and second place throughout all 16 stages of Mario Kart, we switched to Melee. We also had equal skills there, so we settled to us both being Jigglypuff and teaming against two computers at their highest levels. We still kicked ass.
Us winning yet another game, I fell back onto the bed in boredom. "I'm bored," I said, hearing a sigh of agreement from the other boy. "Wanna do anything else?"
-
The walk into town was a bit far, but we didn't mind. We took our time walking on the warm day and Josh played his favorite playlist out loud as far as phone allowed. The songs were diverse, but stuck mostly to rock and alternative- there were songs by The Killers, Muse, Simple Plan, and similar bands. The day got a bit hotter as the afternoon wore on, so now we're sitting on a bench under a tree.
"These songs are so good," I said, making comfortable but casual conversation. Josh's eyes fluttered open- Human by The Killers was on and it seemed to he a favorite of his- and he looked at me.
"Yeah," he said, "they mean a lot to me. The drumming is good, too."
"Oh, that's right, have you started playing the drums yet?" I asked. He'd always had stars in his eyes talking about drumming one day as a kid.
The small talk continued as we got up and continued our adventure into the busy part of the small city. It was beautiful, really, pastel-colored shops were everywhere, many being old-fashioned as well. Our first stop was a family run ice cream shop- those were the best- and ordered vanilla swirls.
"Hey, Ty, guess what?" Josh asked genuinely and yet a little too excitedly. I turned to him, humming a bit to serve as a "what?" With a smile on his face, the blue-haired boy brought his ice cream to my face and got a little bit on my nose. My jaw dropped, gasping, slowly turning into a smile and I laughed.
"Josh! I can't believe you!" I exclaimed. Just then, my laugh turned into a devilish smile as i dipped my finger into my own and smeared it on his cheek.
"Oh, no way," Josh laughed, and i knew most of the frozen treat wouldn't end up eaten.
-
"I'm wiped out, man," Josh said, sitting down and leaning on the breakfast bar. We'd spent the entire day downtown, which included lots of window shopping and a spontaneous trip to the cinema to see some rom-com. It sounded lame, but Josh made it fun somehow.
"Yeah," I agreed, "I'm ready for bed." Slowly but surely, we made our ways to wash up and go to bed. I made myself comfy in the living room, not paying attention to the show on the television and falling asleep with a stupid smile on my face.
-
I wake up slowly. I feel something solid and warm against my leg. What could be in my bed? No, I'm at Josh's- What could be on his couch? I shift my leg, unwilling to open my eyes yet. Feels too firm for a pillow. My eyes flutter open, and when I see my surroundings, they shoot wide open and I tense up.
I'm in Josh's room- in his bed.
