"Come on Nightmare!" My sister purred jumping on me. I sighed as she started chewing on my ear, "What do you want Eve(ēvē)?"

My sister was light brown with white paws, tail, and underbelly. She had icy blue eyes like our parents and was always cheerful. "I saw a butterfly, let's go chase it, please?"

"Mom said we were suppose to wait here until she got back from hunting. She put me in charge, can't you find something to do around here that won't get us in trouble?"

Eve hung her head and padded up to me, "Sorry big brother."

I licked her shoulder, "It's ok, just try to be more careful."

My ears pricked when I heard rustling. I stood in front of my sister with bristled fur. It laid flat when I saw a white she-cat with black ears, tail and paws walk through. She had a black patch over her right eye that covered her face black to her ear. She also had a black patch on her left side.

"Lunartail!" Eve purred and ran to our mother.

She dropped two mice, "You and Nightmare can share this mouse, I'll eat the other."

Me and my sister ran over eagerly and started to eat the mouse. My tail snaked back and forth as we tasted it's warm meat.

I was around six moons old as my mother called it. I never understood the moon system, but I didn't argue. I looked down at Eve, she was the runt out of us. I wasn't a runt, or average for that matter. I was already up to my mothers shoulder.

I looked down at my paws, my left one was white while the rest of me was jet-black. I had icy blue eyes like both of my parents. My mother never told us much about father, other then that I looked very similar to him.

"Alright did you two practice the battle moves I taught you?" Lunartail asked.

Eve shook her head, "Sorry mom I was distracted..."

Lunartail curled her tail around us, "Its ok, I don't actually want you fighting unless you have to. What about you Nightmare?"

I nodded and jumped left and right then lunched downward. She taught us this to confuse our enemies then attack their belly when they are distracted.

"Very good! You will be a great fighter." she purred and licked my ear.

"Can we go hunting yet? I know I'm ready, I'll stay close to you I promise." I begged.

Lunartail shook her head, "I don't want something like a rabbit or a squirrel to overwhelm you. Or worse, if a hawk spots you."

"I can fight it off though, in a moon I'll probably be as big as you!" I meowed swiping a unsheathed claw into the air.

My sister ran to my side and butted my shoulder, "Yeah! I can be the look out!"

"Well... I guess it can't hurt to let you practice on a mouse. Just promise me you won't go off hunting when I'm not around. " she sighed.

My eyes brightened, "We won't," me and my sister purred in sync.

Our mother got down the ground, her belly just above the blades of grass. Her tail was aligned straight with her back and she stalked forward, "This is how you walk."

Me and my sister copied her. Eve tripped and fell onto her side, "It feels funny to walk like that."

"You'll get used to it, try again you're almost doing it." Lunartail encouraged. She paused and looked at me, "Perfect Nightmare!"

I shrugged and sat up, "My is my name Nightmare, am I your curse or something?"

Lunartail laughed and shook her head, "No my dear your father named you. He wanted at least one of his sons to have an intimidating name."
