Meanwhile…
At the orphanage…
“Ms. Hableknuck?”
“Yes? What is it? Any news?”
“No, but umm…”
“Yes?”
“You know these flyers we made; they end up all over town.”
“What of it?”
“All over town, miss. What if one of them bandits find it?”
“Don’t worry.”
“But what if-“
“I told the police. They are aware of the situation. It’s up to them now.”
“But miss…”
“I know. But that’s all we can do.”
“They’ll be looking for her.”
“(sighs) I try so hard to keep them safe-to discipline them, but-“
“It’s not your fault, miss.”
“Who was watching the door? It was your job. You were supposed to be working at the front desk, and as my assistant you should have-“
“I’m sorry miss. I had other matters to attend to.”
“Like what?”
“Remember Bethany?”
“The girl who was just adopted. Yes, I know.”
“We got a call…”
“A-“
“Apparently the Carters were no good.”
“They seemed perfectly suitable, I interviewed them myself. I don’t understand-“
“Miss.”
“Stop interrupting me!”
“Sorry miss, but they sold her.”
“Sold who?”
“The Carters sold Bethany to one of the bandits. She’s with them now as we speak.”
The flyer of Belle sits there on Ms. Hableknuck’s desk. The word ‘Lost’ is printed in big letters above the picture of a little girl, who is sad and alone and on the run.
“Do you think she’ll be okay?”
“I dunno. We just have to pray.”
