Belle’s POV
Where do I go? I bet they’re following me right now! I gotta think. I gotta hurry.
You only have 5 minutes…Run.
I keep running because I know that’s all I can do. So far, I’ve managed to reach the very edge of the forest, but I really haven’t thought out a plan past that. I guess my plan is to just keep running. But for how long can I run? If I’m already exhausted now, there is no way I am going to have the energy to escape. No, I feel more than exhausted; I feel like my internal organs are about to burst. I want to stop, but I’m too paranoid to do so.
Of course 5 seconds later, when I trip over a log due to blurry vision, it’s not a surprise that my whole view on the situation has changed. So, despite the circumstances, I take a quick 5 second break to check my surroundings. Without a watch, time is a complete inept matter to think about. But if I could guess, I’m sure my 5 minutes are up, which means they can’t be far behind me. They could be anywhere. But I hope my being here, on the ground, helps me keep hidden. If there is a chance of freedom, shouldn’t I try to at least make my best efforts to seize it, even though that the odds for it are unlikely?
I rest my back on a tree trunk and allow myself to breathe-and more importantly get some oxygen to my brain, so I can think of a plan.
Okay. I could keep running, but… I dunno if I can. Maybe I should just hide in one place and wait? But hide where? Under some bushes? In a tree? In a hole? Ummmm……
Well…the bushes aren’t big enough to cover all of me and I don’t want to be seen, so that’s out. Ummm… what about… a tree? I can’t climb trees. That’s out. A hole? There aren’t any holes. Oh man. Now what?
Seeing as though there aren’t any more options…
Ummm…well I guess I could try to climb a tree.
Though all the muscles in my body are aching for me to sit right back down, I can’t. I grab hold of the nearest tree with my tiny arms and heave my feet forward.
This is really much harder (grunts) than what it looks like.
I struggle to keep my arms hugged around the tree trunk, after all I have very short arms-I am only 7, but losing my grip is the least of my worries. Thankfully, I did take gymnastics so it doesn’t take me long before I finally get the hang of it. When I’m 8 feet up in the air or so, I finally reach a tree branch.
Then it hits me.
Great! Now I just have to…oh no. I’m so high up. (gulps) What if I fall? How am I supposed to stay up here until dark? In a dress! Oh no! I think I’m in trouble.
You can probably see me from miles! Oh no. But how do I get down? How do I-
Suddenly, I hear the snapping of a twig close by…
(gasps) OH NO!
Panic strikes- and before I can even think, I lose my grip of the tree all together. I feel myself tumbling off the side of the tree trunk as I try to grab onto something, but I’m too late. My body lands in a heap on top of some aged leaves…
The day goes on…

Meanwhile:
“(chuckles) Do you think she knows?”
“Nah. (chuckles) They never see it coming.”
“(sips can of root beer) I still can’t believe you did that.”
“What? Like I was actually going to find the kid?”
“’Course not…”
‘What? You’re not going soft are you?”
“I just think it’s cheating.”
“So?”
“Yeah…but how did you plant that chip on her?”
“Easy. I put it on the skirt of her stupid ‘lil dress when she wasn’t lookin’”
“ Ah. (takes another sip) So we just wait?”
“Yup.”
“What if she runs off, past the-“
“Don’t worry. See the red dot? That’s her. Looks like she didn’t get very far.” He points at the blinking red dot on the screen of the tracker device, while the other nods at it in agreement.
“Probably stopped to look at some daisies.” The two of them laugh their drunken heads off and cheer for more beer.
The tracker device gets tossed to the side as the two of them relax by the side of their oddly hooded, yet inconspicuous truck, slowly watching the day pass by until it is time for them to resume to their duties as what they have been referred to as ‘the bandits’.
