8: Brother Jace

January 20 9.15 PM

Nathan:

“So you do have a brother,” Anya said, cocking an eyebrow. I gnashed my teeth together.

“Yes, unfortunately, I do,” I said through my gritted teeth while I stepped out of the way to let him in farther as he released Cam from the bear hug.

“Aw, why must you speak down on me like that brother?” Jace frowned.

“You’re never around, you’re always partying, you seldom took care of us, so why should I speak highly of you, brother?” I spat.

“Jacey!!!” Claire’s shrill voice rang as she spotted her eldest brother. She ran to him and he grinned as she jumped into his arms and she spun her around.

“How’s my Claire Bear doing?” Jace grinned. She giggled.

“Good! We were about to have spaghetti!” She grinned.

“Oh! Yummy! Can I join?” Jace asked his littlest sister. Claire turned her big green eyes to me and she pouted a bit.

“Can Jacey join us for dinner?” she asked. She knew that Jace and I didn’t get along and that look never fails to work on me. I let out a sigh. That girl is too smart for her own good.

“Sure,” I said reluctantly. She turned to Jace and threw her arms around his neck.

“Yeah! Jacey he said yes!” she screamed in his ear. He winced but smiled all the same. Cam was standing close by, smiling up at our older brother with admiration in her eyes. I let out another sigh. If only they knew the truth about him. If only they knew what their old brother did. I pushed those thoughts to the side and put on a fake smile. This was going to be a long night.

Anya:

The man who had just assaulted my waist with his toned arm was smiling with his sisters. He looked like he was in his early twenties, maybe 23 or so. He had jet black hair and light green eyes. His full pink bottom lip was pierced with a pair of snakebites and the bridge of his nose was pierced too. He was attractive but he also screamed bad news. Tattoos cover his body and although he had a loving smile on his face, he seemed to intimidate me a bit. I just stared at him. I didn’t speak a word, I just stared. It wasn’t in admiration; it was me trying to figure out what kind of person he was.

“Anya?” I heard someone say. I tore my concentrated gaze off the distracting man and looked at the source of the voice. Nathan.

“Yes?” I asked.

“How bout we start setting up the table for dinner?” he questioned, pointing to the four seated dinner table. I frowned.

“There’s only four seats,” I stated.

“I’ll have to get one from my room,” he said. I nodded.

“Okay, let’s set the table,” I said with a small smile. I loved being around Nathan, he was fun to be around. We quickly set the table, sharing a few laughs, while his brother and two sisters sat on the couch and talked. Nathan came back with another chair and set it next to the table. I put the noodles in a bowl in the center of the small table and the sauce sat on it. “Dinner’s ready,” I smiled. They all went to their seats and I sat in mine, both of the brothers on my side. I felt like a buffer zone and it wasn’t fun being their buffer zone. I could cut the tension between them and sell it for money. Why I’d sell tension for money, I don’t know, but my point is that the tension was thick. We ate dinner in silence. After we were all done I offered to clean the dishes. I took up everyone’s plate and Nathan took them from my hands.
