James POV:
I clinked my hip against Seamus as we peeled potatoes in the kitchen.
“Hey,” he laughed, returning the favor with a playful smile.
“Hey what?” I asked.
He narrowed his eyes and frowned at me.
I let out a small laugh and went back to my potato peeling.
Silence wore on between us and I knew both of our minds were wandering to Aleks and Eddie.
It had been so short—their reconnection. In one second, they were always hanging over the other and in the next they were yelling words of hatred at the other.
“Do you think Aleks will be okay?” Seamus interrupted my thoughts.
I frowned down at my potato and thought about a depressed Aleks. I knew it was coming now that it was official he and Eddie weren’t living together anymore. Then I thought about how he might turn into what Seamus had been and I thought that things were about to get very difficult around here.
The last thing Seamus needed was to be living with a depressed person when he himself was still trying to recover from depression.
“I think he’ll be fine. He’ll get through this—he’s tough when he needs to be.”
“I don’t think he’ll be tough this time. You saw him fall to the ground when Eddie left.”
He had me there. I knew this wouldn’t be easy on him—I had just wanted to have Seamus think he wouldn’t get to such a dark place as he had been.
“Maybe. He has us. We can help him if he needs it,” I responded, choosing my words carefully.
“True,” Seamus said, ending the conversation.
We began to chop up the potatoes when Aleks appeared around the corner, changed into sweat pants and a gray T-shirt striped with different shades of blue. First step to recovering right there, I thought, upon seeing his clothing choice.
“You guys making dinner?” he asked and, from his voice, I could tell he had been crying.
“Yeah. We’ll be done soon. Just have to put these on the grill with the chicken,” Seamus responded.
“Oh. Cool,” he said and wandered over to the table where he plopped himself down.
I glanced over at Seamus, wondering about his expression. He shot me a ‘I dunno’ look and I cleared my throat.
“So, Aleks,” I began, “you hungry?”
“Yeah.”
That was good. He was still in the mood for eating. Hopefully that lasted.
I was about to ask him something else, but he interrupted.
“Listen, you two. I don’t want you guys to think you can’t talk to me about Eddie. If you have anything to ask me about what happened, feel free. I figure that if I talk about it, I’ll feel better and can…feel happy faster.”
“Of course,” Seamus said. “We want you to feel comfortable talking about anything with us. We just didn’t know if you wanted to talk about it.”
“I understand. I should’ve said,” he said, glancing back out the sliding glass door, “I’ll get over this. I will. I have to.”
